Im having a supermarket grocery delivery tonight.

Out of interest, do you tip your driver?

2 of my siblings do delivery driving. They often get £2 from oaps for taking it into the kitchen. Or random bottles of beer , cans of pop, choc bar , pack crisp.

Hannahthepink · 31/01/2025 21:11

I used to pick the shopping in Sainsbury's for online orders. Delivery drivers already got an extra couple of quid an hour more than everyone else in store and it was widely recognised that it was a very cushy job role on the whole.
If anyone deserves the tips it's the worse paid, absolutely knackered team of mostly women getting up at 3am to pack the shopping against ridiculous speed targets, not the better paid (mostly male) drivers swanning around in their vans!
I'd be furious at the thought of any of them secretly pocketing tips!

chakrakkhan · 31/01/2025 21:32

No. He gets paid the same as me. I don't get tips!

KnutsfordCityLimits · 31/01/2025 21:37

My DB delivers for Ocado. I don't think he expects tips but he does appreciate it around key times of the year such as Christmas when he is carrying really heavy loads for people. There are other times such as football matches when people are ordering a lot of heavy drinks. I think he says it's three times that he has to move the shopping before he leaves it with the customer. He always chats to people who want to chat, particularly if he thinks they're isolated, and he does little jobs sometimes for people like putting out the rubbish! He doesn't get much in the way of tips though. It has made me think about it and I do tip drivers if I've ordered particularly heavy stuff or at Christmas.

Sinkintotheswamp · 31/01/2025 21:53

No.
I am super quick about unpacking (aka dumping it on the porch floor) though. I don't like to keep them waiting.

StrikeAlways · 31/01/2025 21:58

No of course not. It’s not America. They are paid a proper wage!

Spurber · 31/01/2025 21:59

Oh no! Are we meant to tip them??? Oh no

CalmBlueCritic · 01/02/2025 09:37

I tip. Started tipping in lockdown , fiver a time.

CalmBlueCritic · 01/02/2025 09:38

Meant to say, I had never had groceries delivered before. It's wonderful!

Needsomesunnyweather · 17/03/2025 18:35

Know this Is an old post but I was looking up tipping and on another post lots of people saying they tip and can't understand anyone not tipping . Here people are saying they don't. I don't understand tipping at all but I do tip but it's out of guilt . I think if you are well off and can afford then great but don't judge others. But interesting some won't tip a supermarket driver who carry's heavy boxes but will tip a waiter who brings a plate.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 17/03/2025 18:45

No, they are paid employees, it is their job!

SingingSonnets · 17/03/2025 18:48

No. I always offer them a cold can of coke or something in hot weather but that’s it.

3678194b · 17/03/2025 18:49

No, never. I wasn't even sure if they're allowed to accept tips. I don't trip delivery drivers, except Dominoes sometimes. And I don't know why I even do that since they now charge for delivery!

Needsomesunnyweather · 17/03/2025 18:51

Out of interest then why do hairdressers restaurant staff etc get tipped. There are threads in here where people are shocked that some don't tip the pizza delivery etc

Ribenaberry12 · 17/03/2025 18:52

Only at Christmas.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 17/03/2025 18:52

No. They're paid to do their job like every else.

doitwithlove · 17/03/2025 19:30

Hubby is a delivery driver, it makes his day to get a few quid tips. My personal thought on it is if delivery persons have stairs to climb to get to address they should be tipped.

Needsomesunnyweather · 18/03/2025 06:16

Thanks everyone for joining in its really interesting hearing from everyone

TheHerboriste · 18/03/2025 06:41

Yes.

DustyLee123 · 18/03/2025 06:42

Absolutely not.

Motheranddaughter · 31/01/2025 19:29

Yes I do
I tip everyone

Everyone? Really? Even people who earn more than you or who own their own businesses?

SoScarletItWas · 31/01/2025 18:01

No. We tend to get the same one every week. We have a lovely chat while I frantically shove everything into bags on the doorstep.

If I ever needed him to bring the trays through into the kitchen, I’m sure he would. I’d still only tip him if he put it in the cupboards 😄

A few years ago I had a driver ask if I needed him to do that.

We had unexpected snow so my carer had not arrived. so he brought everything in to the house.

He didn't get a tip but I did send an email to say how helpful hee was.

I don't tip the supermarket delivery or any other delivery drivers but I often hand out a chilled can of pop because I know some of them work a long day without a break.

I have also done the same with the bin collectors, again in the summer.

LumpyandBumps · 18/03/2025 08:16

It’s completely up to the individual what they do, and we are free to tip or not tip. I tip some, don’t tip others and have absolutely no judgement of others who do or don’t.

I always wonder though why so many people feel the need to justify not tipping by saying something along the lines of ‘ they are paid to do the job’

Of course they are being paid to do the job. They wouldn’t be there providing free services out of the goodness of their heart.

The young man who recently cleared a blocked drain for me was being paid by his employer. He was, however, friendly polite and efficient, did more than was required to just clear it, and cleaned up throughly after the job was done. I thought he deserved the tip I gave him.

Cassiopeiae · 21/04/2025 07:19

Yes, I go out of my way to tip the supermarket delivery driver a few coins. In part because it benefits me and partly because it's just a nice thing to do for the driver. I see it as a small gesture of appreciation and a win-win. In my experience if you treat people nicely (especially when you don't have to) you'll get it in return: Greasing the wheel basically.

HRTQueen · 21/04/2025 07:26

Yes

I sometimes get shopping through Deliveroo and there is the option to tip when you order and I have done when I used to get big online orders but no longer so this
