Supermarket Grocery delivery, do you tip your driver?

CornishTeaTime · 31/01/2025 17:58

Im having a supermarket grocery delivery tonight.

Out of interest, do you tip your driver?

GrandHighPoohbah · 31/01/2025 18:15

I have had a supermarket delivery pretty much every week for the past 15 years. I have never tipped a driver.

YourFriendlyGhost · 31/01/2025 18:29

Husband is a driver. Biggest tip has been £10, lowest £2 but he never, ever expects one, even when delivering crates of heavy bottles up stairs to flats. He’s paid a fair hourly wage.

We put it in a jar towards our holiday

LumpyandBumps · 31/01/2025 18:29

I have tipped a couple of times. Once in awful snowy weather when I was surprised he even attempted to deliver, and another time when the driver had been injured on an earlier call but still carried on.
( I would have been fine with them cancelling on both occasions, but appreciated their resilience).
My son has driven for Asda and Tesco and cash tips were rare, but he was offered a cold drink or a biscuit bar several times a week.

Anonym00se · 31/01/2025 18:32

The only tipping that goes on round here is me tipping the contents of the trays over my hall floor because he’s standing there huffing and looking at his watch while I’m trying to empty said trays as quick as possible like it’s a task on the bloody Cube.

DreamW3aver · 31/01/2025 18:34

I don't get deliveries now but when I did it never occurred to me to tip the driver, why would you? It's their job to deliver the orders, what about the person who picks it in the shop, would you tip them?

maudelovesharold · 31/01/2025 18:36

Doesn’t really matter why you do it, tbh. You’re keeping wages low by tipping. You appreciate them so much you want them to stay on a low wage.

How does that work? You mean if everyone stops tipping, low paid workers will all get a pay rise? They’ll just still be on shit pay, but with no tips!

PizzaPunk · 31/01/2025 18:36

No, because I already pay for delivery on top of the price of my groceries.

Apart from at Christmas though because the poor fuckers look knackered!

During really hot Summer months I've offered a cold bottle of water or an ice lolly and they're normally gratefully accepted.

They can't accept tips.

Nor can delivery drivers.

It doesn't stop them accepting tips though?

Topseyt123 · 31/01/2025 18:38

No. I never have. I don't think they are allowed to accept tips anyway.

FebruaryCrow · 31/01/2025 18:38

I gave the driver a few quid at Christmas (the 23rd) and he was so chuffed with it that I suspect it's not usual.

I don't normally tip delivery drivers, no. But I do leave sterling reviews of their helpfulness when they are helpful.

Oh God for a moment there my brain thought you were going to write 'with a Magnum of champagne ...'

I need to get off MN.

Luminousalumnus · 31/01/2025 18:42

Yes, since DS took a temporary job doing this for Asda and I've seen how rubbish the working conditions are. Apparently about half of people tip, between 2-10£

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 31/01/2025 18:43

No. They get paid for doing their job. It would feel really weird and awkward slipping them a fiver or something. I don't tip anyone though.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/01/2025 18:44

No! They're mostly not allowed to accept it anyway and I pay for delivery why would I tip on top?

o sorry, I should have said - Magnum ice lolly - they are always pleased ha ha

spacepies · 31/01/2025 18:48

Never tip anyone im uk not us.

Eatyourcrust · 31/01/2025 18:58

I tip!
Just a couple of pound coins. It’s hard physical work, and they often bring the delivery just inside the door.
Deliveries save me time and petrol, so don’t mind showing some gratitude.
If things are broken or squashed, I don’t, but that is relatively rare.
I’d better not say which supermarket it is, I don’t want to get anyone into trouble. . .

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 31/01/2025 19:00

No, it would become very expensive with them coming every week. I don't tip the Evri woman either.

TeenLifeMum · 31/01/2025 19:00

No, but also don’t tip bin men and don’t understand how people do. Our come at 6.50am and there’s 6 of them. I don’t even know if they are the same ones each time.

izimbra · 31/01/2025 19:01

My 19 year old son has been working part time as a Tesco delivery driver since starting his engineering degree last year. Loves his job. Loves chatting to old people. One of them gave him a can of beer as a tip last week. Another one contacted Tesco to praise him for clearing snow off their path after delivering their groceries. Tesco gave him a bar of chocolate 😁 My son values every show of appreciation.

Favouritefruits · 31/01/2025 19:03

No never! I’ve never heard of anybody tipping a delivery driver, maybe a box of chocs at Xmas if it’s the same driver weekly!

JustFeedMeCake · 31/01/2025 19:09

They're not allowed to accept tips and can get into trouble if they do and get caught.

@Tesco

Morning. I understand why you may want to tip our drivers especially now but I'm afraid this is against company policy as our drivers aren't allowed to accept tips or gifts from our customers. Ty - Karen
