Marianne Faithfull has passed away today age 78.
Such an icon of the 60s. Her autobiography is still one of the best rock biographies I've read.

What an incredible life. I saw her live in London in the late 90s - leaning on a stool, puffing on a fag as she sang all her best-known songs. She even graciously did a signing session after the concert

MermaidEyes · 30/01/2025 20:20

I bet that was amazing @SmugglersHaunt !

I saw this on Twitter and when I read the name I immediately recognised it but I wasn't sure where from.

But then I googled it and it all came rushing back. I remember my parents playing this song when I was very young:

"It is the evening of the day
I sit and watch the children play
Smiling faces I can see
But not for me
I sit and watch
As tears go by"

Sad news. @MermaidEyes I read the autobiography years ago and thought it was fabulous. Talented woman, shame on the press for treating her mainly as a man's appendage.

YourChirpyFatball · 30/01/2025 20:52

She looked wonderful in that video. I love that fashion and hairstyles. Was always envious as had curly and wavy hair. We used to iron it under brown paper! 🥴

mathanxiety · 30/01/2025 21:52

Very sad. I always thought of her as someone quite tragic, perhaps because of "As tears go by", which always brought a lump to my throat.

Yes using the term icon for Marianne Faithful is accurate for once @MermaidEyes

tobee · 31/01/2025 01:27

Stupid autocorrect - Faithfull !!

She’s an image for worship and a window into Heaven? 😳

GiraffesAtThePark · 31/01/2025 03:11

Love the song Guilt. Never read her book, will look it up if I get the chance.

Jacquette · 31/01/2025 03:42

I read her memoir back in the 90s and it really was good. It struck me as a honest account of her life up until that point.

The movie Thelma and Louise used her song for the theme song The Ballad of Lucy Jordon.

Farewell, Marianne Faithfull.

RIP Marianne. I had Broken English when I was 16 (sat by the stereo to turn it down during the sweary, non parent friendly bits) and loved her.

Remarkable, incredibly talented woman who pulled through and turned things round against the odds, on her own terms.

I was so cross at the BBC TV news report of her death, they made her out to be a tragic has been : 'attempted a come back, her voice had cracked' and that her 'hit song' was written for her by the Rolling Stones, no mention of her own talents

That's appalling and of course totally untrue. I got cross with the "Rolling Stones muse" headlines, least of what she was.

MaggieBsBoat · 31/01/2025 11:07

Oh she was fabulous.
Horrible when people talk her like she was just a famous dude‘s girlfriend.
RIP dear Marianne, mighty woman!

I absolutely love that scene:

Eta: sorry, I thought this was the scene from the film, but it isn't, it's a series of clips.

I've just sent a complaint to the bbc😊

Uricon2 · 31/01/2025 15:01

I heard an announcer on BBC TV lunchtime news introduce the piece about her with "More than just a muse to the RS" and describing her as a singer/songwriter/actor @NecklessMumster , perhaps your email got through and was noted! Grin

Yes, I thought the same. She was a neighbour of a friend of mine when she lived in Dublin and used to come over for a drink. She was very cool and had great stories.

Same! I loved a lot of her songs- and her style.
Loved that they used her to play God in Absolutely Fabulous!
RIP Ms Faithfull
