How to work out percentages

purpleme12 · 30/01/2025 19:54

How do you work out percentages?

Eg 41 per cent of 900?

900 ÷100=9
9 x 41= 369

But what other method is there?

Ask google.

WhyArePiratesCalledPiratessss · 30/01/2025 19:58

Percentage as a decimal and times.
Same thing. Just more efficient.
So 0.41x900

JollyViper · 30/01/2025 19:58

Google BBC bite size

MostHighlyFlavoredGravy · 30/01/2025 20:00

0.41 x 900

Or

(41 x 900)/100

Tiredforfive45 · 30/01/2025 20:01

10% = 90
1% = 9

(90x4)+9 =369

Easy to do mentally this way.

IAmNeverThePerson · 30/01/2025 20:01

0.41*900

MrsBobtonTrent · 30/01/2025 20:03

900 x 0.41

Throughthebluebells · 30/01/2025 20:09

To work it out in my head I would do

10% of 900 = 90 x 4 = 360
1% of 900 = 9
41% = 360 + 9 = 369

On a calculator I would just do 900 x 0.41 = 369

Get this app . https://www.omnicalculator.com/other
It will calculate anything
I use it for my worktime sheets but ;

Got a field and want to know how many cows you can graze in it
Or
how much tinsel , lights and baubles you need for your Xmas tree
Or
How old you are on each planet
Or
How much it will cost you to 3D print something
Or
How much pizza toping you need

And hundreds of others

The one thing it can't calculate is how long you are all going to spend looking up weird maths ! 😀

I am literally THE worst at maths and understanding how it works.

I'd have to work out what 10% is first, then times that by 4, then work out 1% and add it on 🤣

For some reason I get confused with the sums given in the examples here!

Perfect28 · 30/01/2025 20:18

X .41

cakeorwine · 30/01/2025 20:47

1% means 1 hundredth of something.
So if you divide a number by 100, you will get 1% of it.

Once you have 1%, you can then work out any percentage by multiplying by that number.

Thanks everyone

My child was doing some homework.

I looked on the BBC bitesize after pp suggested that (I found the method of working out 10% and 1% etc which some suggested on here) I think possibly that's the one she's been taught at school? I'm guessing because the other methods mentioned on here she didn't seem to know about.

I told her about the other method too but so far she's said the first method on my OP might be the best.

I'm not very good at maths! 😭

I work out what 1% is and then multiply that.
