Bleeding on mini pill

I'm in perimenopause and been on HRT for 5 months. Generally feeling much better. My doc moved me from combined pill to mini pill (Desogestrol) in November. First month was fine, but I've been bleeding since 23 December. It's not been heavy at all, mostly spotting or a v light bleed as well as some uterine lining. It's got heavier in the past 2 days - still light but heavier than it has been and I'm having cramps too

I know that the mini pill usually stops all bleeding but that the first few months can be a bit of a mixed bag. Anyone have a similar experience and any idea how long the bleeding can continue for?

I stopped daily bleeding after about 4 months. Had a year with only 4 periods. Then a 6 month period of daily bleeding.

So I changed hrt meds. I couldn't put up with the bleeding any more.

HRT meds changed again. No contraception at all now. Periods every 6 weeks.

just under 6 months.

I went on it while breastfeeding and it was fine until I stopped feeding. It drove me insane, I had bleeding for 6 months straight. Explained to the doctor who put me back on the combined pill. Hopefully you'll settle down after a while , if not I'd ask for something more suitable .

Oh lord, that sounds pretty grim. Thanks for the comments, it's helpful to know other people's experiences. Think I will give it one more month and if it hasn't settled down, will consider switching to the Mirena

Hello OP, curious to know whether things settled or whether you made the switch to mirena. If you went on mirena, how was/is it?

Hi @Seekinginfolady, no it never settled down sadly. After bleeding nearly every day for 3 months, I decided to take myself off it. I'm not on any contraception at the moment, but thinking about going back on the Mirena. A friend of mine had one fitted recently and they offered her a local anesthetic injection in her cervix, which she took, and only had mild cramping. I'm on continuous progesterone as part of my HRT and having a light bleed every 10 days, which can't continue either. I just want to stop bleeding!

It never settled for me. For many women the mini pill is not suitable. I was on it for 2 years and by the end barely had a day when I wasn't bleeding. I've gone cold turkey on all artificial hormones now and feel so, so much better! My cycle has totally corrected itself (I am 46 for reference).

I know this is an old thread but my GP made me stay on it and the bleeding stopped right on the six month mark

That's great news. Did you take breaks between packs or take continuously for 6 months?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/07/2025 13:12

I took it continuously
