Finally accepted my Shark is crap. What shall I get instead?

Just that. My corded Shatk vacuum is awful. Heavy. Barely picks up mud, doesn't touch cat hair.

What shall I get instead? We have wooden floors but lots of rugs and I like to use it to get the cat hair off the sofa too.

4 floors so a robot vacuum won't work.

Recently bought a Henry after being fed up with cordless vaccuums (have had Dyson and Shark in the past). They worked fine when I lived in a small apartment but with a bigger house, a dog and a kid they were useless at getting all the dirt. My Henry Pet is so much more powerful and particularly on rugs and carpets feels like it's giving a really deep clean. All the builders I know have Henry's which they use for everything and are still running fine! The hotels I've worked in have also had them. They just keep going and going...

Billyblue47 · 30/01/2025 20:41

My Vax is shit

JustRollWithIt · 31/01/2025 07:35

If it has lost suction it is likely you just need to clean the filter, then suction will be as good as new.

Gatekeeper · 31/01/2025 07:38

MIELE C2, had it 11 years and the suction is still phenomenal

destiel00 · 31/01/2025 07:38

I love my henry quick
Wish I'd got one ago

3rdtimeinflorida · 31/01/2025 07:38

Another vote for Sebo. My husband works in flooring and rates them the best.

Mardyybum · 31/01/2025 07:38

We have a Sebo too and it’s great. It was my Grans and got too heavy for her so she gave it to us so I’m guessing it’s way over 10 years old. My sister is a cleaner and uses a Henry but on the occasion she’s done a clean for us says the Sebo is far superior!

rosemole · 31/01/2025 07:43

Shark is crap. Spent half my time cleaning the hoover rather than cleaning what I wanted the hoover to clean.

Henry has changed all that - it's amazing!

Lonelycrab · 31/01/2025 07:45

Another Miele vote here

SnoopysHoose · 31/01/2025 07:46

My Hetty (Henry's sister) is excellent, had it a few years now and never had a problem.

Caspianberg · 31/01/2025 07:48

Miele corded

I do have a cordless shark for day to day running about and cleaning up kids crumbs, but it has no where near as good suction as the corded Miele

AgathaX · 31/01/2025 07:51

Miele corded is brilliant, a real work horse. We also have a Vax cordless which is great for nipping around doing a quick clean. It picks up well and has a decent battery life, but I don't think cordless anything will be as good as a decent corded.

KittensSchmittens · 31/01/2025 07:52

Miele C3 - practically sucks the carpet off the floor.

stepfordwifey · 31/01/2025 07:53

After the Shark shit, I also bought a Miele. Every single time I vacuum, I say out loud to DH,"God I love this cleaner." It's been about 3 years!

The suction is brilliant, easy to store and even changing the bag is simple. So robust and such good quality. Best one I've ever owned and won't buy any other brand in the future.

I bought mine during Black Friday with £100 off. Worth checking on deals. They're not cheap but worth every penny.

I also decided my shark was a useless pile of crap. Then I thoroughly cleaned it, and bought a new HEPA filter for it. It’s pretty good now

Agree with this. Ours had lost a lot of suction so I took off the main compartment and thoroughly cleaned the two filters below. One is like a flat pad and the other like a square donut. We've had a lot of dust from decorating and these things were filthy. After cleaning and drying these the Shark was as good as new.

You can also remove the panel on the bottom to clean the rollers which might help, I'm constantly finding hair clips trapped in there.

The Shark does have it's limitations. Our decorating included removing blown plaster and stripping wallpaper. Our Henry had been relegated to the cupboard but he was much better for the larger tasks of sucking up chunks of old plaster and any wallpaper we couldn't pick up.

Sebo.

Bloody tanks.... not attractive but they can't half vac up crap.

Was recommended to us at John Lewis (we were tempted by the Dyson).

Our Sebo now 21 yrs old.
It's survived a few tumbles down the stairs, several house extensions/renovations (abused badly by one lot of builders ). Good on pet hair, good on dried mud etc...

Even our cleaner (who has a Henry) tends to leave her Vac in her car boot and just uses ours.

We have had uptight Sebos (3 in about 35 years) and they are very good vacuum cleaners. When I got my 2nd one, the first one was still going strong and a relative took it to uni. However the latest one is less powerful. I think this was due to European regulations. It still seems to work fine. They are quite heavy and this is my husband’s vacuum cleaner. I use a fold over cordless shark which I am quite happy with.

fairyup · 31/01/2025 08:24

Mieles if you can afford one.
Henry if not- they are indestructible and very very good

Eenameenadeeka · 31/01/2025 08:27

Miele for sure. Have had both shark And Dyson but Miele far better than both in my opinion

Flossflower · 31/01/2025 08:27

Caspianberg · 31/01/2025 07:48

Miele corded

I do have a cordless shark for day to day running about and cleaning up kids crumbs, but it has no where near as good suction as the corded Miele

Is this an upright or a cylinder? My daughter has a cylinder Miele and I don’t rate it but I just don’t like cylinder vacuum cleaners. I don’t like them on large areas in particular.

JustAskingThisQ · 31/01/2025 08:28

Notstrongandstable · 30/01/2025 15:37

Agree my Dyson is crap, due to battery. Suction is good otherwise.
Has anyone found a cordless one with a decent battery? Mine only lasts for 6 mins on max suction and I've already replaced it and feel like it's going again. So annoying!

Cordless ones aren't designed for much more than a spill. I'm pretty sure the manufacturers have made this clear on the numerous cleantok videos that go around comparing vacuum performance.

The one I saw a comment from I think it was Dyson was where a woman was showing with one of those pet hair broom things how little her Dyson cordless actually did for her carpets. There was a comment from Dyson saying that cordless vacuums are for low level maintenance between using a proper corded vacuum cleaner (obviously from their range) which you should do at least once a week.

Kamek · 31/01/2025 08:29

I've got an upright Sebo and cordless Henry and would really recommend both.

moggerhanger · 31/01/2025 08:32

I'm Team Henry (or anything from the Numatic stable). There's a reason they're the go-to for commercial cleaning companies.

DeathMetalMum · 31/01/2025 08:40

We have a sebo felix, and love it. It's not as bulky as the classic sebo's. We are more carpets and it's really good on carpet. I went back to a bagged vacuum and don't regret it.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 31/01/2025 08:47

I have had Hoover, Dyson, Shark - I now have Henry, we love Henry, he has become and valuable member of the family

TriangleScratch · 31/01/2025 08:51

Honestly, I promise - the filters have been cleaned - it's sparkling but still crap.

I'll go and look at a Sebo and a Henry today.
