Are you a refuse collector or know one?

Sorry, boring post but I've just put our Wheely bin out. Neighbours all put them with the handle against the fence whereas I put ours handle facing out. Am I doing it wrong?

I distinctly remember being told in a council leaflet to have the handle against the wall/fence/whatever when left out on collection day. I think someone told me it's so the bin collectors can easily check if there's anything "illegal" in them before loading onto the wagon .

Rubyfw5 · 29/01/2025 22:02

@CharlotteFlax thank you, that makes sense. I thought I was being kind leaving them handle out so they could just grab and go. Never anything 'illegal' in my bins but the collectors don't know that. I must've missed the memo 🤦🏻‍♀️

I put mine sideways on! Smile

Our garden waste bin sticker comes with instructions that include to have the handles facing outwards for collection, so would assume the same went for our other two bins - everyone puts them out the same way so if it's wrong we are all wrong!

Rubyfw5 · 29/01/2025 22:40

FFS 🤣. Who knows now! I might go with @BatchCookBabe and put it sideways, if I can get mine onto the end. Or try to catch them and ask but I'm not usually here when they come 🤷🏻‍♀️.

😆 I do this, so they can grab it easily, but also see into it easily. Never looked at how they prefer it, but they have never complained! 😄

I have never thought even to question this

jollygreenpea · 29/01/2025 22:51

I always put them with the handles facing outwards.

JC03745 · 29/01/2025 23:02

We don't even have a fence (renovating) so had to work out what you meant by putting the handle against the fence? 🤔

I always face the handle towards the road. I too assume its quicker/easier for the bin men to grab and go.

I do keep it slightly further back on our property. I have cameras and live on a popular lane which leads to open fields where people walk dogs. I've seen people throw poo bags, rubbish and even poo scrapped off a shoe with leaves put into my bin! Also, dogs love to wee on our recycling bin and food caddy!😡

MouldyCandy · 29/01/2025 23:13

I've never heard of the handle facing the wall/hedge before. Surely that's a faff for everyone?
Back in the day I thought it was bin sideways with the handle facing the direction the truck is coming from (everyone in my street bar me does this) with the binmen putting it back handle out so their mate could do a quick visual check to see if a bin had been emptied or not.
I put mine out with handle facing the road. I'm with PP - if the collectors are emptying 1,000+ bins a day I can at least do something to make one a bit easier for them.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 29/01/2025 23:24

I've just had a look on our local council website, and I quote;

In most cases the normal collection point for wheeled-bins will be at the
kerb edge directly outside the front of each individual property, bins
should be placed with the handles facing the road.

Seems pretty clear and logical to me.

Sorefootalways · 29/01/2025 23:29

I was a bin lady years ago! Out into the road or sideways, handles facing the wall is madness. And while on the subject of bin preferences 😂i lived in a fairly windy place and so many people had on the bungee cord closers which are the worst things ever, I much preferred the houses with the brick on top instead!
