Why, on some of my WhatsApp conversations do the two ticks not turn blue, even when the person has answered the questions so I know the messages have been seen? I have a whole thread where the ticks have remained grey.

you can change the settings to not show blue ticks - i.e. so the person sending can't tell if you've read the messages or not. That will also not show 'person X last seen at 12.03' at the top.

They will have turned off the read receipts.

Yes I have my settings so it doesn’t show if I’ve read a message or when I was last on etc as it’s too intrusive for me. It also means I can’t see the information about my contacts.
different for groups though- I can swipe and see who has read a group message I have added.

Because they don’t want drama llamas checking up and being like ‘I know she’s read it so why hasn’t she replied immediately’

Because some people don't want everyone knowing when they've read their messages, not everyone wants to reply straight away.

Is in settings under privacy maybe.

They have their read receipts turned off. You can do this in settings.

You can also reply to the notification that pops up, as opposed to opening the app, which doesn't mark the message as read. My son does this all the time.
