Could they be kestrels?

Iloveeverycat · 28/01/2025 20:19

Peregrine

whatisforteamum · 28/01/2025 20:20

My guess is kestrel.

TheSpottedZebra · 28/01/2025 20:49

I vote sparrowhawk.

Roughly how big were they: what bird (or thing) were they the size of?

Branleuse · 28/01/2025 20:53

Buzzard or peregrine falcon

LadyNellCardross · 28/01/2025 20:55

Buzzard

ProbableDoris · 28/01/2025 21:04

When I first saw the photo I immediately thought sparrowhawk if it’s in a garden but now I agree with those saying buzzard - the rings on the tail are too narrow and close together for a sparrowhawk. Not a peregrine or a kestrel, doesn’t have the eye marks.

Some kind of hawk definitely.... but hard to say size with no scale.

But it is REALLY unusual to see them sitting on the ground, 2 together and so close to a person. I'm intrigued, are they wild birds? Is it in your garden or what? Are they ill?

VorpalSword · 28/01/2025 21:26

The picture is from a wildlife camera. I have more photos at work so will try and find some with other details showing. Scale is harder but I will see if there is something else to give an idea of size.

DH is a birdwatcher of over 60 years - they are buzzards.

BellissimoGecko · 28/01/2025 21:30

They are common buzzards.

Sparrowhawks are much greyer and have a longer barred tail.
