Just seen in my garden, what is this? Sorry not a good photo. He has a black face and greyish brown chest. South England. Thank you anyone!

Looks like a female bullfinch

clary · 28/01/2025 11:45

Yeh I think a female bullfinch. The male is bright bright pink.

BrightGreenTomatoes · 28/01/2025 11:46

I thought bullfinch initially because of the size and build but the colour was all wrong of course I didn't think it might be a female. Ill go and see if I managed to get a shot of the beak

Def not a coal tit, I get lots of those and too small for a marsh tit although that's interesting to see as I don't think I would recognise one of those either! I haven't seen redpolls for years. But we definitely have an answer and one I really should have thought of so I'm clearly out of practice! I guess you get used to seeing what you see. I do hope she comes back and brings her mate, I love seeing a bullfinch. I have a pair of nuthatches that visit every day, they are fun. Thank you bird experts!!

Put some seedy feed out, that attracts bullfinches! It really lifts your heart to see them, doesn't it?

Nuthatches too, how lovely! We had a spotted woodpecker on our feeder lately (the red, black and white ones); also a sparrowhawk who swooped down and picked off one of the little birds... they all have to eat, eh...
