Do I need a futon (as a regular bed)

I am doing some furniture/room changes which has meant I am sleeping on a mattress on the floor.
I am sleeping so well, I think it’s both being low and the hard floor underneath.
been looking a low beds but reckon the slatted set up won’t be as comfortable, just like a regular higher bed.
I am wondering if the more solid frame of a futon would work. Have never slept on a futon mattress.

No, futons are crap for your back. The mattresses are always too thin and they're just not comfortable.

My futon was the best bed I ever had. I look back fondly to it.

You can put a regular mattress on a futon base if you don’t like the futon mattresses.

I had a futon for 20+ years very happily on an oak bed base that I'm still using for a sprung mattress.

Futons need to be turned regularly (top to bottom, side to side) as they don't wear evenly.

Maybe my sprung mattress on a futon frame would work. Im not sure I need a base for comfort - it’s just so it looks proper!

Have a look at the Natural Bed Company, based in Sheffield. They do low bed bases. (Mines the sahara in oak, which is quite low.)

I think a mattress needs to be off the floor for air circulation, else you end up with mould.

It's not about looks, if no air can get under the mattress you'll get mould.
