Despiste what many can say, im really excited hoping to get this job as a cleaner in a school. I'm so anxious, the interview is tomorrow and i've been working in warehouses picking, so don't know how could it be? would it be hard to get the job or easy peasy? i've applied and 10 min later i had a call for interview. I've just finished maternity leave and really don't wanna go back to the job i had as it would take me 50 hours a week away from my baby plus it's a 0 hour contract and they want me to go back to night shift, saying that if there's early finishes i would need to leave as well, mind you it's an hour journey on the bus and i haven't got a car, there's no transports at night. and this one is just perfect close to home, a part time, perfect!

I send you all the best for your interview. I hope it goes well.

SomethingBlues · 26/01/2025 13:31

I’m a cleaner in a primary school and while some aspects of the job are fairly disgusting… the hours are good and I’m left alone to crack on. I stick a podcast on and off I go and four hours later, I’m all done. I’ve definitely had worse jobs - civil service, I’m looking at you lol

my interview asked me how I would clean a bathroom ( I went through the steps methodically - top to bottom, focussing on high touch zones, no cross contamination with dirty toilet areas etc), they asked me about safeguarding of the children, and also about chemical handling and storage (look at COSHH).

good luck - you’ve got this.

Casdentwo · 26/01/2025 13:36

I’ve been a school cleaner for almost 20 years now, just be you at the interview, term time is a normal clean ie wipe tables , hoovering, empty bins, toilets that type of thing , holidays windows , skirting, cupboards etc.
you home skills will be your work/interveiw skills, routines to establish within the hours offered , if there’s a bit of rubbish on the floor on your way in pick it up shows you’ve got an eye for making it look presentable
good luck let us know how it goes

StarlightLady · 26/01/2025 13:37

Good luck OP, look them in the eye when you reply. Maybe emphasise on standards, perhaps have your own list. Perhaps ask if there are other things when performing the role that you should look out for, faulty light, leaking window etc.

Hard to get applicants.

Casdentwo · 26/01/2025 13:39

Health and safety will possibly come up, wet floor signs, chemicals locked away and follow measures /dilution,hoover wire is a trip hazard so be aware of your surroundings

CarolNoE · 26/01/2025 13:46

Good luck. As above, if you need to pad out time or ask questions talk about colour coding to prevent cross contamination ie red clothes and mops for bathroom, blue for classroom, green for kitchen just to show you get the gist of it...or whatever their way is. Spill kits for accidents/sick.
That you know not to mix chemicals but will be learning their coshh policy and procedures anyway.
Log maintenance issues to cover health and safety.
Deep cleaning/weekly or monthly schedules on top of daily stuff.
Will you have to go in extra in holidays to do heavy duty stull like stripping and buffing the assembly hall floor, if that is still a thing now?

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 26/01/2025 13:50

You have plenty of cleaning experience in your home - emphasise this but also that you will need to learn how they do things

Say you are a good timekeeper, have a good attendance record and are hard working.

Good luck op, hope you get the job.

soccermum10 · 26/01/2025 13:53

Just wanted to jump on and say good luck. Don't put pressure on yourself, be yourself and keep in the back of your mind that you're doing them a favour 🙂

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 26/01/2025 13:54

They will ask you about safeguarding children. That's important to you and you would report anything at all that was untoward to your supervisor or head of safeguarding.

Ididntsaybanana · 26/01/2025 13:58

Good luck today!

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/01/2025 14:03

Good luck op! You've had some good advice here. I reckon the most obvious "mixing chemicals" danger that everyone should know about is not mixing bleach with anything apart from cold water. It might be a good idea to google what you must never mix with bleach (I'm not sure exactly because I don't use bleach in my house). The caretaker at my children's primary school once mixed cleaning products up by mistake and he ended up in hospital and the school had to be shut for the day! So having knowledge about that sort of thing might be helpful for an interview

Good luck xx
