Big Garden Birdwatch

Anyone taking part? We haven’t got feeders in our garden so don’t get many “exciting” birds but might do it as it’s only for an hour.

I'm going to do it tomorrow, had a lovely collection this morning but I was dashing to work. Depends quite a bit on the weather I suppose. Our usual are long tailed tits, parakeets, jays, Robins.

ShodAndShadySenators · 24/01/2025 23:18

The first time I did it I had one lousy woodpigeon in the hour. Not even a pair! And I knew I had quite a few, blackbirds for example, but they didn't show so much as a feather...

By the next time I did have bird feeders and had about a dozen species all show up to log. It's been much better since that first flop of a survey Grin

I'm going to be away and didn't have time today, and we'd laid the bird feeder down because of the wind. Pity... some of our usual suspects were about but also for a while a lovely male bullfinch, I think only the second I've seen in our garden in 30 years

Yes.

Remember that KitKat advert with the roller skating pandas?

That’s me every year for the Garden Bird Watch.

Every bird within 10 miles waits until the hour is up before landing in my garden .

NewNameBridget · 25/01/2025 00:11

We'll do it.

Though, like others, on the average day we might see, blue tits, Robins, great tits, starlings, wood pigeons, town pigeons, collared doves, gold finches, jackdaws, jays, cole tits, black birds, and the occasional nuthatch or woodpecker.

On BGBW we'll be lucky to see a single Robin. And to make matters worse we ran out of fat balls today.

Yes us too, stood diligently for an hour this morning and even though we had a few species the regular blackbirds, blackcap and chaffinch failed to appear….. until ten minutes after it ended 🙄 highlight for us was a goldcrest which is not common in our garden. It does make us wonder what passes through when we don't watch because we also had a chiff-chaff shortly after we completed our hour but were still paying attention.

Needmorelego · 25/01/2025 14:50

Oh I forgot I was going to do that!
Might do it tomorrow instead. Although living in South London it will be parakeet, parakeet, parakeet, pigeon, parakeet.....🦜

I'll do it tomorrow. It's too late now, the sun is quite low and too bright for me to see into the garden without blinding me. I just replaced the empty fat balls so hopefully there will be some left to entice them tomorrow.
We had some redwings for the first time ever in the garden when it snowed the other week but they seem to have disappeared back out to the field. We just get the usual robins, blackbirds, sparrows and blue/coal/great tits. Last year we had a tree pipit and sparrowhawk (luckily not at the same time).
