Looping in? When did this become a "thing"?

I've seen this about five times in emails during the past week alone. It seems to consist of copying someone into an email, telling them they are being "looped in" to the discussion or activity. It's on a par with "ping an email" and reaching out and deep diving.

Sounds a bit loopy to me.

It must be derived from the expression 'to keep someone in the loop'.

My (very lovely) colleague is a looper

'Looping in Jess for awareness'

'Just looping you into this chat'

'Should I loop Ben into the email trail as well do you think?'

NO. STOP LOOPING.

I just imagine having a big lasso chucked around someone.

Though you might need to loop them when you are reaching out to rescue them from the deep dive to look for the low hanging fruit.

Oh yes, I've been looped into email chains this week by one particular colleague.
