School Absence

I'm always blown away when I read that in England ( not sure about the UK) you get fined if you have unexplained absences or chased up and letters if your child is Ill too many days.
What other countries do this?
Where does the money go? What is it used for?
I'm in Australia and I took my kids out for 4 weeks for a wedding in Italy. I told their teachers and was sent on my way. I'm sure if it happened every year, something would be said, but it was not a big deal. I obviously do it during senior schooling.
Just wondering what happens where you are if your child has too many days off (deemed by the school). I find it fascinating.

Sorry. I can't find the edit button.

  • I know England is part of the UK. I meant what happens in the rest of the UK.
  • I obviously wouldn't do it in the senior years if schooling.

You can be fined if they are out for more than 5 school days in a row, or within 10 weeks. But a three week holiday is the same fine as a one week holiday.
More than 3 weeks they can take you off the school register. But some heads are lenient with permission

Its £80 per parent per child.
Council gets it.

Thats England... its not as extreme as people make out. You don't get madsive fines for one day!

No fines for school absence in Scotland.

In Wales, well my local area anyway they are more lenient than England. Many families including myself take the kids out for week or so each year. Not known of anyone being fined.
