Famotidine - has anyone tried this med?

I have had a lot of gut issues over the years. Tests are all clear (colonoscopy, scans, blood and stool tests etc). Gastroenterologist is confident it is IBS with functional dyspepsia.

However, for the last 3 weeks I have been experiencing a lot of acid, nausea, burping, gas and diarrhoea every morning. I haven't changed anything in the way I eat or drink (very plain foods, avoiding my triggers and only water).

I am convinced my high stress levels (caring for a parent with dementia) and deep in perimenopause is contributing to it all but nothing is easing it.

I am not one for taking meds as so many upset my gut and I really don't want a worsening of the diarrhoea that already have. However, my GP has prescribed me Famotidine but she did say it could give me diarrhoea 😬

Has anyone tried this? Is it easy on the tummy?

My daughter has been taking this for several years, for acid reflux. She reacts badly to quite a lot of things, is gluten intolerant, can’t take ibuprofen, but has never had any issues with famotidine.

Yes I take it and really like it. Have used PPIs before but they've always made me really bloated. I now have a (more or less) flat stomach for the first time in a long time!

I was switched after omeprazole started to cause problems with low magnesium and have had no issues with it at all

I take it and it’s fine, I don’t think it’s as good as omeprazole but it does the job (I just need to take more of it). I only got switched to this as I have kidney disease and the two drugs are processed by the kidneys differently

Thank everyone, I'll collect the prescription next week and give it a go. Hope and pray that it helps.

Hi did you take the famotidine? If so did they help ? I have a hiatus hernia and symptoms are totally misery . Constant burping, wind stuck in my chest which causes palpitations. Also reflux . The symptoms are constant. I've tried ppi and they caused even more wind and burping . My gp has prescribed the famotidine but I'm worried they trigger any heart arrhythmia as they are a h2 blocker and I can't take other antihistamines. I suffer palpitations regularly so don't want to trigger anymore .

Bachrach · 03/12/2025 18:15

How do you feel with the heart palpitations I have been

Mollylolly · 27/12/2025 18:34

Bumping this up . As I've been prescribed famotidine but nervous to try them. In case it triggers palpitations. Or other side effects?
