Do you think this a job offer or interview?

Hello!

My friend and former colleague has recommended me for a job at the company he works for. The CEO of said company has also seemingly vouched for me.

The Chairman is now apparently “keen to meet” me next week. I am not sure I even want this job but happy to go for a chat.

Do you think I ought to approach as a job offer or an interview? Not sure how much to prep considering I’m quite happy in my current role.

Any thoughts very welcome :)

We call these “exploratory chats”. You get the chance to ask questions about the company, where you could possibly fit in and what a role may look like for you, and they get to know you and if you would be a cultural and role fit.

I would say it won’t be a hard interview, but be ready with examples and evidence of your achievements and skills and what you could bring to their company.

Good luck!

Interview.

But would advise having a good think beforehand... if you really don't want to consider move jobs, don't waste your (and the CEOs time) and cancel.

I’d be seeing this as more of an informal meeting, seeing if your face fits type thing. I’d do some prep as it will likely have some aspects related to the role. They’re bound to want to know about your background and work you’ve done to date.

Interview, but on an informal basis. I’d expect it to be followed by a more formal interview before any thought of a job offer.

Thanks for the input guys. I’m happy where I am at the moment so thinking about how to approach it. If it came with a big pay increase I’d consider it…

It sounds trivial but one of the reasons I asked is because I have literally have no smart/formal clothes. My role is very much behind the scenes. Not sure if I want to spend any money getting an outfit!

Every informal chat I’ve had about a job has always turned out to involve interview questions. Just be prepared.

Thank you. That’s helpful to know.
