Maternity start date - any admin people around?

Maternityquestion · 22/01/2025 18:42

I am due to go on mat leave in February and currently work mon and Wednesday.

I want to start my mat leave on Monday 3rd March but our admin seem to think it needs to start on the Thursday before - i.e the 27th immediately after my last working day.

I’ve never needed to use eg my annual leave for non working days. Eg if I was taking a week off it would be from the previous wed night and include the whole of the next week for 2 days leave. My days are fixed.

Thank you to anyone who can help!

I would have thought you tell them the date you want leave to start and it's not their place to tell you to start it before that date.

Your admin is wrong. I work in a school and my mat leave started the first day back after the Easter holidays. You can start it on the day you’d be due back.

Statutory Maternity Leave

At least 15 weeks before your due date, tell your employer when the baby is due and when you want to start your maternity leave. Your employer can ask for this in writing.

Your employer must write to you within 28 days confirming your start and end dates.

I work in HR and your admin is wrong, it can start on the day you mentioned.
