LinkedIn - what is it?

As the title says. What exactly is LinkedIn? Is it just work related? Is it a chat forum? Can it be used for personal chat? Romance?

It's supposed to be for marketing you business and networking but yes it can be used for personal chat and there are a lot of scammers.

Temporaryname158 · 20/01/2025 21:49

It’s not for romance. It isn’t a dating site, it’s a career networking site I’d say

Jennyathemall · 20/01/2025 21:49

It’s for Romanian scam artists to rapidly seduce married men away from their families on Christmas Day.

Eyesopenwideawake · 20/01/2025 21:51

Social media with a business focus. If you actually looked at the bloody thing you'd see for yourself 🙄

mynameiscalypso · 20/01/2025 21:51

It's mainly a professional site; most people post about their jobs, news from their industry, things they've been working on plus the occasional 'personal post' if they are, eg, fundraising. My team use it as the main way in which we share our content/reports with our network.

If this is aimed at me, I’m asking because I don’t have it. I assume it’s business related but I’ve also heard of flirtations. I don’t know, hence asking.

Can everyone see what you write, or is it private messages?

OP posts:
mynameiscalypso · 20/01/2025 21:54

You can post - like you would on Facebook - and there's also the capacity to send PMs, yes. 99% of the ones I receive are people looking for a job with me and the other 1% are me organising drinks with former colleagues.

Peanuts1234 · 20/01/2025 21:55

So can random strangers message you?

OP posts:
BumpandBounce · 20/01/2025 21:56

People can send you connection requests but you can’t choose to Accept or Ignore. Mostly messages relate to people who think you could do business together.

I’ve never had anything other than business and professional approaches on there.

Both like Facebook you can write on someone's wall or use messenger

Why don't you just look at the website?

Peanuts1234 · 20/01/2025 21:55

So can random strangers message you?

It depends on your sittings. You can turn it off so only people on your network can message you. I keep mine open because occasionally I get requests from media on there.

It is bad form to flirt and use it for dating. It's a professional networking site. It has got a bit more Facebook like recently with content but people do say if they think it's not appropriate.

Women who have been hassled by men for flirting also call it out publicly ime.

Cansomeone · 20/01/2025 22:18

It's corporate facebook. It's hell on earth but unfortunately more and more recruiters are using it for professional jobs.

ChannelFiveDrama · 20/01/2025 22:22

It's like Facebook for work. People wanging on about themselves but with a career/growth/networking focus.

TabloidFootprints · 20/01/2025 22:45

I got my current job through LinkedIn. Current boss saw my work elsewhere, looked me up, saw my CV,, contacted me.

Nonsenseidiot · 20/01/2025 22:55

I’ve had randoms message me and flirt. I had to manually change my settings so they wouldn’t.

Peanuts1234 · 21/01/2025 12:14

Eyesopenwideawake · 20/01/2025 21:59

Why don't you just look at the website?

I did. But it doesn’t exactly say ‘set up for work/career, oh with flirtations/dating, occasional bogus romance thrown in’ does it 🙄

Thank you to all who have explained from personal experience. If I’d listened to @Eyesopenwideawake I wouldn’t have known any of this. I’ve never used it, so obviously have no idea as to how it works. I had heard it’s mainly work related, but also personal relations can evolve so to speak 😉 It’s good to have clarity, thank you.

Both. Basically a career synopsis and network

suburberphobe · 21/01/2025 15:52

No need to be bitchy.

You need to sign up for it before you can check who's looking on there for you when you get an email about it.
I'm not on it.

Sad to read it's just more sick men looking for women.

I do love the phrase 'wanging on'! This is an excellent summary.

There are a lot of self promoting narcissistic numpties wanging on indeed 😁

superplumb · 21/01/2025 17:31

Business related social network. It's quite good but annoying when people type utter tosh to make their work sound amazing ( especially when you know it isn't true).
I did make the mistake of contacting someone in a field of work I was interested in.. he got a bit carried away..then apologised and de-connected me. You can't stop people following you though. That's the only thing.

No need to be so rude.
