Thinking of Rome

If men are thinking about Rome daily what are women thinking about? Is there a common thread?

Pardon?

BluesandClues · 20/01/2025 21:24

Honestly, it’s depends on the day.

I like reading about various periods of history.

I think most of all, I spend a lot of time thinking about how I’d brush my teeth if I somehow got transported back in time.

Dynamo101 · 20/01/2025 21:27

I think about death quite a lot. 💀 Not in a morbid way…

QueSyrahSyrah · 20/01/2025 21:28

I'm thinking about how they've got the time to think about the Roman Empire while we're doing the lions share of the life admin...

I reckon it can all be traced back to.. well.... The Roman Empire 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pardon?

It's supposedly a thing that men spend a lot of their days thinking about ancient Rome and being Emperor/gladiator/Senator/Centurion etc (or all of those)

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 20/01/2025 21:34

I think about Rome daily, and how I can't wait to go back. I even daydream about moving there, then get said that it's never going to happen.

I am female and probably missed the whole point of this thread.

rosemole · 20/01/2025 21:34

I have no idea who's thinking about Rome but I do often think about how life would be without running water, supermarkets, central heating, bank accounts, cars. That sort of thing.

kindlyensure · 20/01/2025 21:34

I have a theory that a lot of women think about Virginia Woolf.

Even if they don't realise it is her quote specifically, they think how they might reach the state where "a woman must have money and a room of her own"

(Woolf goes on to say 'to write') but I think a lot of women think about their own reasons for wanting a Room of Their Own - and an independent income - to achieve their dreams.

littlebilliie · 20/01/2025 21:38

I was thinking about the bathroom pipes in the bathhouse in Pompeii they found and how we are using something similar.

I tend to think about women in Afghanistan daily at the moment.

I was thinking about the fall of Rome yesterday, how political systems change and disappear. The Roman system wasn’t so different to now with most of us plebs and a 1-3% super rich in power.

plus ca change plus c’est le meme chose.

I’m on summer holidays so have the time to think about it.

I say this all the time ‘nothing new under the sun.’

Women are too busy thinking about what to have for dinner, what time to pick little Johnny up from his club, remembering to make the dentist appointment, get the car serviced, buy some stamps and oven cleaner to have time to think about Rome.

IsitaHatOrACat · 22/01/2025 17:06

Maybe womens rights? It seems everywhere I look and every news article I hear has some aspect of this. Or maybe it's just on my mind so I notice it more

whatsappdoc · 22/01/2025 18:25

I think about the Suffragettes. ie whatever I'm doing I think what would the Suffragettes have thought about this?
Although the past year I've expanded to include thinking about time travel and Brian Wilson.

poemsandwine · 22/01/2025 18:42

I think about Rome, e.g. all empires fall.

More often, though, Margaret Atwood and Virginia Woolf.

Oooh time travel - that's a good one to think about!

soupfiend · 22/01/2025 19:38

I think about Rome daily or nearly daily

Other periods in history

Interspersed with recipes, food, shoes, perfumes and household task lists

That is what my brain is filled with.

soupfiend · 22/01/2025 19:39

Oh I spend a lot of time thinking about my health problems, real and imagined.

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 22/01/2025 19:53

Not Rome, but I do spend waaay to much time thinking about spending a month in winter in an apartment in Venice, with just my dog, walking around the streets in a very chique overcoat, oversized sunglasses and amazing boots. 😳😆
