The strangest reason you've been denied entry to a nightclub

What's the strangest reason you've been turned away from a pub or nightclub?

Last night I was turned away from a night club because I had a mini sombrero in my handbag. 😂😂
Apparently it indicated I was out as part of a group and they weren't letting groups in.

It was just me and my husband.

(I had the sombrero because we'd been to a Mexican themed birthday party and I took one of the decorations home for my little boy)

Once because my skirt was a fire hazard, it was a normal black skirt.

Another time my boyfriend at the time wasn't allowed in because his grey jeans looked too close to blue and you were not allowed blue jeans.

Because my ID was obviously stolen, it was not, i had had a haircut since taking the photo but it was still definitely me.

Orangebadger · 19/01/2025 11:34

Because we did not look gay... it was a GAY in London and an abba tribute band were playing so me and my very straight male friend queued to get in and they just said no. Can only assume it was because we clearly were not gay, but they did not explicitly say this. It was a long time ago, maybe 15 years back.

Meandhimtogether · 19/01/2025 11:35

My DH was turned away because his shirt had no collar.
It was the best thing to happen as he came to the club
I was in. We met for the first time and now we have been married
for over 45 years.

Not me but my husband and many years ago, perhaps in a city could have been Newcastle. Because he looked like a squaddie. He doesn’t, he looked like a Bobby and he is a Bobby .

DaDaDoDaiDa · 19/01/2025 11:41

Not a nightclub, but I was once refused entry to a Wetherspoons because I was carrying a shopping bag containing a pizza. It was for that night's dinner but they seemed to think I was planning to eat it on the premises.

chelseahealyslips · 19/01/2025 11:43

Back in the day, if you were a man you'd be denied entry because you weren't wearing dress shoes. I remember lads putting their socks OVER their trainers on an impromptu night out in town and hoping the bouncers wouldn't notice.

More recently, I was in a group and given a firm no because one of our party "looked like a slag" 🤔 we're all in our 30s and married.

Cultural appropriation seems a reasonable reason to ban someone

You ok?

Yeah that was the reason the door staff gave I'm sure 🙄🙄

That's mad OP.

Mind you, I read it as you had a mini Solero in your bag and wondered how it didn't melt! 🙈🤣

I did this too!!!

Here we go 😂😂😂😂

How dare you have a mini sombrero OP. You should be utterly ashamed of yourself. Start by apologising to the Mexicans and then have a stern word with yourself.

Krest · 19/01/2025 11:52

Both these I did get let in so not quite the same but :

Once when I was 21 or so. It was a Sunday morning about 10.30-11am and I was early to meet whoever was giving me a lift for my football match so I decided to go into a pub for a coke while I waited. Empty pub , not a high end one, just a standard pub that did food etc. I ordered my drink and then promptly got kicked out for wearing football stuff. I was in a tracksuit and coat so fair but it was completely empty, Sunday morning and a standard pub where people went in dressed very casually all the time. No sign on the door either. But fair if that's the rule.

Another time my then BF and I decided to go in a pub and have a drink. Very skint so we ordered something like a line cordial or shandy I can't remember. We were sitting opposite each other deep in chat sitting quite closely when the landlord came storming over, had a massive go at us for 'conoodling' and threatened to kick us out. He thought we had been sit there kissing the whole time but we hadn't, we'd been simply talking. We were shell shocked and so embarrassed as people looked at us. I was only about 19 but I wish I'd said something - me now would definitely have said something. Looking back I strongly suspect there was some racism involved (I am white and my BF was black). This was around 1998.

Plantmumfailure · 19/01/2025 11:55

Did they maybe think you'd nicked it from the restaurant or something? You know, like students used to do with beer glasses and ashtrays?

I don't think I've ever been turned way from a nightclub. The only time I've seen that happen was with large groups of men or when someone was messy drunk.

Tbh, you laughing loads at him plus him maybe thinking you nicked something from a restaurant might have made him think you were bit pissed. I can see why he'd think that (even if he was wrong)

coldscottishmum · 19/01/2025 11:59

I was once rejected because my license photo is 10 years younger, I looked like my (5 year
older!) sister. Nightclub security knew my sister and that she had a younger sister and refused entry despite it being my ID and all my details. This was years ago now and I was bitter with my sister over it for ages. I was 18 and on a pub crawl with friends for a party for someone else’s 18th. Bitter was an understatement!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 19/01/2025 12:00

A friend from school was very nearly denied entry because she's blind and has a false eye. They thought she looked drunk. 🙈

WetBandits · 19/01/2025 12:00

I was wearing shoes that had spiky studs on them (hideous things, looking back!) and the door staff wouldn’t let me in unless I handed them in as they ‘might be used as weapons’ Grin I had to wear the ballet shoes I kept in my bag for walking home and collect my shoes when I left!

LovingLivingLife · 19/01/2025 12:01

I was pregnant. Visibly showing. Apparently it wouldn't be safe 💃🏻🪩⛔

DreamSpaceships · 19/01/2025 12:02

I once queued for a club and the doormen walked along the queue saying no, no , no , yes, yes. One of my friends got a “you with them? No, then”

Tbh I think we were better off not going there!

desperatedaysareover · 19/01/2025 12:05

My boyfriend at the time had a detached retina which left him looking like his eyes were, I dunno, weird? The door staff thought he was off his tits. What made it more hilarious was he was the least likely person ever to take drugs, he may have been in the running for the straightest man who ever lived.

Nope, they specifically said it was because it was obviously part of a fancy dress outfit and indicated we were out as part of a group and they weren't letting any more groups in.
I explained that it was a party decoration given to me by a friend and I was taking it home for my little boy.

We started laughing once we'd been told we definitely weren't allowed in and were walking away so that didn't factor into their decision.
We weren't pissed or behaving as though we were. We didn't argue or get bolshy, we just walked away and went somewhere else.

This reminds me of the Knocked Up scene where he says ‘shouldn’t you two be at yoga or something?’

Only whites may wear jackets?

No, I would not support that policy.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 19/01/2025 12:13

Back when I was 18 For apparently faking my police approved ID. I had gone out clubbing with an old friend, both got asked for ID she'd forgotten hers and just told them her DOB they let her in. I showed them my ID and got refused entry. Friend fucked off and left me. By this point I was absolutely seething and went to grab a couple of the police officers that were outside to get them to verify my ID. They still wouldn't accept it even though one of the police officers told them there was no way I could have faked the embossed Humberside police stamp on it. Once it was clear said friend wasn't going to come back out to me, the 2 police officers then walked me to a different club where some other friends were. Came in with me to make sure I got in safely and could find the people I was meeting and then took me back home afterwards when they saw me stood alone waiting for a taxi ( everyone else had moved on to another place) the club I was refused entry into did give me 4 vouchers for some drinks. The friend who'd ditched me wanted to split them. She was told to fuck off

AyrnotAir · 19/01/2025 12:13

Not refused entry but thrown out one night. There was a system where to get to another part of the club a row of people would walk one way whilst others would walk past beside you in the opposite direction. A guy walked past me and shoved his hand up my skirt and groped me. I went mental at him and I was the one thrown out the club whilst he stood laughing.

Oh the misery 🤣🤣👏🏻

Not me but my then boyfriend. He was completely sober and I was sloshed to the point where I dropped my ID on the floor twice. Looked back as I got waved in to see him being turned away for being drunk and slurring his words. This was in London and he did (and I presume still does) have a strong Leeds accent.

TossieFleacake · 19/01/2025 12:15

Went to Dublin with then DH and a couple of friends, think it was about 2001.
I wasn't drinking but as I approached one of the bars, I tripped and stumbled into the bouncer.
He refused me entry as he said i was far too drunk if I couldn't even walk ... he then radioed all the other bouncers and told them not to let me in anywhere else either.
So I spent a cold and sober NYE on the streets of Dublin, barred from entering any pubs or bars for being bladdered when I hadn't drunk a drop.
Absolute rubbish NYE, never been back to Dublin either.

Edited to correct spelling.
