Anyone medical awake?

I’m writing here because I’m not sure what to do. My dh has been out with friends and he’s clearly broken his hand. It’s a rare night out, not a regular occurrence, no drink problems etc. but he’s definitely had more than a few tonight and managed to fall over. His hand is swollen and so are his fingers including his wedding ring finger, can’t get the ring off. His little finger looks at a weird angle but that might be due the swelling. I’ve iced it, he’s had ibuprofen and paracetamol but he’s fell asleep now. Anyone medical know if it’s safe to leave for a few hours whilst he sleeps himself sober a bit? Obviously we will go to minor injuries when it opens tomorrow morning. Are we ok till then? What a pillock 🙄🫣

Wake him and take him to be seen (I'm not medical but I do have common sense and your description to me says he needs that seeing).

Nugg · 18/01/2025 23:07

I'd wait til morning tbh

Wait until the morning….in his state if he needed anything doing surgically they would have to wait in anycase.

Mrsmch123 · 18/01/2025 23:12

I would let him sleep for a bit then go in the morning. Worst case scenario he needs surgery, they arnt going to do it while he's under in the influence. So let him sleep and head to minor injuries tomorrow.

CheeseQuiche · 18/01/2025 23:12

I'd say wait till morning. They can still set it then if thats what it needs.

Peppermintpatty56 · 18/01/2025 23:14

Yeah I thought they'd need him to wait anyway. How he can sleep I don't know! The beer pain relief is real!! I can't sleep cus I'm worried it's going to turn purple 🙄🫣

If his hand is so swollen that his ring is tight, there are two scenarios. If that finger is not affected and is just swollen because of general hand swelling, you might be able to use soap or a thread to get the ring off. If you can't, or it's affected, he really needs to get seen because the swelling is likely to continue and it could cut off blood supply. Is there a minor injuries unit near you?

WaitingForMojo · 18/01/2025 23:16

I’d get him seen tonight, because you can‘t get the wedding ring off. It might need to be cut off so it doesn’t compromise circulation.

hashisucks · 18/01/2025 23:16

The only issue with waiting is the ring with swelling around it - that could cause problems if it is hampering circulation

Peppermintpatty56 · 18/01/2025 23:19

We do have a minor injuries unit near but it's not 24 hours, it opens at 8sm

Those places are shite in my opinion. I'd get to A&E when you're ready. It's the definition of an accident.

Discombobble · 18/01/2025 23:22

Someone needs to get his ring off, it’ll act like a tourniquet - A&E

IsitaHatOrACat · 18/01/2025 23:23

He needs the ring taken or cut off so needs to go to a and e or an urgent care centre. Plus, circulation and the nerves could be affected by the injury so his hand needs to be set in the correct position to prevent long term damage

IsitaHatOrACat · 18/01/2025 23:25

Washing up liquid might help with ring removal. But he still needs medical attention

verycloakanddaggers · 18/01/2025 23:26

He needs to go to A&E due to the ring being stuck. This can't really be left.

Plus if anything is dislocated it needs to be dealt with ASAP.

Wolfiefan · 18/01/2025 23:26

I agree he may need the ring cut off. I would also disagree that someone getting so pissed they haven’t noticed that they have broken a finger doesn’t have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.

Whatzzitz · 18/01/2025 23:29

Ring 111

Saz12 · 18/01/2025 23:30

Cut the ring off. Obviously start on rhe inside. If you can't get that done, then A&E.

How on earth would u cut the ring off???? What tools would you use? 😳

Hacksaw or a Dremmel.

HMW1906 · 18/01/2025 23:38

A&E nurse here. That ring needs to come off before it potentially restricts the blood flow to his finger…this would result it his finger basically dying. The finger at a weird angle could potentially be dislocated, this could also cause issues with blood flow to his finger, it may need pulling back into place to restore blood flow (which they can do even if he is under the influence of alcohol). I’d wake him up and take him to be seen tonight.

My DH has a multi tool that would definitely cut a ring off.

I agree that getting the ring off asap is important

Thebogopogopanpacificgrandprix · 18/01/2025 23:41

Mumsnet doesn't do A&E unless your head is falling off. He has an injury that could cause him to lose fingers, wake and take.

Conqueeftador · 18/01/2025 23:41

He really should be seen tonight op. Sorry. That ring needs removing.
