Bloody motherland again.

Third thread this week where the OP has described someone as “exactly/think Amanda from Motherland”

I’m convinced people think motherland is real and they need to emulate the drama in real life.

Yawn.

OP posts:
IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 18/01/2025 16:30

I feel like you’re a Julia tbh

Redandbluespots · 18/01/2025 16:30

I don't see what the problem is?

Snorlaxo · 18/01/2025 16:31

I’ve not watched it so the reference doesn’t mean anything but it’s quicker than explaining what the person is like. Clean freak (like Monica from Friends), unyielding (like Sheldon from Big Bang etc) etc

Hedgerow2 · 18/01/2025 16:32

What an odd thing to say. Amanda in Motherland is a very particular character type so it's a quick and effective way of describing someone. Doesn't mean they think she's real Confused

Turmerictolly · 18/01/2025 16:34

It's shorthand for a 'type' of person a lot of people are familiar with. I'd get it.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 18/01/2025 16:36

People are just using it as a shorthand to a personality type, no one thinks it’s real.

W0tnow · 18/01/2025 16:37

No they don’t. They’ve watched the show. They know the characters.

Andthebellsringout · 18/01/2025 16:37

It's a stereotype that people recognise, a shorthand for an affluent, self obsessed alpha Mum. Referring to her as an Amanda just helps people picture the type of person. They are releasing Amandaland soon on BBC OP so it will be sticking around for a while! Just like people would refer to someone as a Victor Meldrew for someone moaning, or Hyacinth Bucket when talking about someone snobby with delusions of grandeur.

Digitalised · 18/01/2025 16:39

It’s my name and I fear it’s going to be used like ‘Karen’ is 🥴

Andthebellsringout · 18/01/2025 16:40

I think most people have referred to someone as a Del Boy but they don't think he's real, its just a reference from popular culture.

Thebogopogopanpacificgrandprix · 18/01/2025 16:42

I watched it for the first time last night and really enjoyed it. Pleasantly surprised to see Graham Linehan back at the BBC (albeit an old series).

Drivingoverlemons · 18/01/2025 16:44

Agree OP. Calling a real woman an ‘Amanda’ = instantly biased AIBU audience.

PlumpUpTheJam · 18/01/2025 16:45

People have always compared real life people to fictional characters.
Princess Charming. Sheldon Cooper. Hermione Granger. Steptoe.

fingerbobz · 18/01/2025 16:45

Oh no, i thought it was a documentary about women and parenting

Im gutted you have told me that

Itisjustmyopinion · 18/01/2025 16:46

It’s just a way to illustrate a personality type. It’s being going on for years even back to when people were described as Mrs Mangle or Hyacinth Bucket

So the yawn should be about you starting a post about something that is pretty normal, especially on a discussion site

BarbaraHoward · 18/01/2025 16:52

Yes, agree with everyone else. Amanda is an overdrawn comedic take on a particular kind of mother. As are the other characters, and the characters in most sitcoms.

It's a handy reference just like Monica, Frasier, Niles, DelBoy, Basil Fawlty etc.

Tisthedamnseason · 18/01/2025 16:53

I don't see what's wrong with using a character to explain a type of person you mean. I think that's pretty normal, and a good shorthand.

Using Amanda from motherland is obviously going to portray the person you're describing in a negative way, but I don't think that means it's unhelpful. Even if the only use it has is showing what the OP thinks of this person, accurate or otherwise.

I think it'll be used by mumsnetters, but I can't see it being used in the same misogynistic way as Karen as a lot of the population wouldn't watch Motherland. She's a dick but she's also attractive, stylish and rich! Plus Lucy Punch is great.
The character started off as a caricature but became more likeable and sympathetic by the time we encountered her awful mother and saw her getting on with her ex's new partner (much to her mother's disgust ) and having fun at Ann's party. It became clearer why she was desperate to keep up appearances given her mother's constant put downs.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/01/2025 17:01

Difference is that the other characters tend to be from times when it was more likely everybody would have a clue what they're talking about.

A BBC sitcom (as that's what google tells me it is) means no more to me than somebody saying I was like a Celebrity Jungle Island Death Match person or a Richard Curtis heartwarming seasonal comedy character would.

Tractorsanddiggers · 18/01/2025 17:01

Too much time on mumsnet this week OP?

Only on Mumsnet. Don't worry.

Matronic6 · 18/01/2025 17:03

If you find it so boring why have you started a thread about it?

denhaag · 18/01/2025 17:04

What makes you think posters think Motherland is real and not a sit com?
I have seen 2 references to Amanda and I know exactly what the poster meant. I am under not illusion that Motherland is a documentary.

Yes, I started watching on iPlayer this week & I love it. I think I'd seen trailers for it but ignored them, so I'm really glad someone referenced a RL Amanda & mentioned Motherland on another thread.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/01/2025 17:12

It's when people come on and post wringing their hands about a " Handmaids Tale" and "this has shades of Gilead" my Hmm sensors bristle .

No - they are Made Up
