Bloody motherland again.

Third thread this week where the OP has described someone as “exactly/think Amanda from Motherland”

I’m convinced people think motherland is real and they need to emulate the drama in real life.

Yawn.

You’re being a bit of a Victor Meldrew

I think it'll be used by mumsnetters, but I can't see it being used in the same misogynistic way as Karen as a lot of the population wouldn't watch Motherland. She's a dick but she's also attractive, stylish and rich! Plus Lucy Punch is great.
The character started off as a caricature but became more likeable and sympathetic by the time we encountered her awful mother and saw her getting on with her ex's new partner (much to her mother's disgust ) and having fun at Ann's party. It became clearer why she was desperate to keep up appearances given her mother's constant put downs.

yep, the episode introducing her mother, you thought, oh, THAT explains a lot.
none of the characters are all good or all bad. they all have their flaws. I mean, you even see a redeeming side to Julias selfish husband when you realise they have a shared sense of humour (teasing each other about the builder)
none of them are one sided. most of them are very flawed. which makes them all more three dimensional characters.

BoudiccasBangles · 18/01/2025 18:02

I’d get it. I swear Motherland stopped me turning into Amanda, although these days I’m lurching more towards Julia.

Tisthedamnseason · 18/01/2025 18:03

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/01/2025 17:01

Difference is that the other characters tend to be from times when it was more likely everybody would have a clue what they're talking about.

A BBC sitcom (as that's what google tells me it is) means no more to me than somebody saying I was like a Celebrity Jungle Island Death Match person or a Richard Curtis heartwarming seasonal comedy character would.

References can't be restricted to only things everyone will definitely know.

If you find it so boring why have you started a thread about it?

Felt like it 🤷🏻‍♀️ got a four hour layover at the airport

BTW is this new series literally called Amandaland? I assumed that was a joke.

no, it always was going to be. they can't get everyone back, so they're focusing more on her.

It's when people come on and post wringing their hands about a " Handmaids Tale" and "this has shades of Gilead" my Hmm sensors bristle .

No - they are Made Up

This is not the same thing at all. Handmaid's Tale was a warning to us all. When I read the book years ago it seemed far fetched. Not so far fetched now is it, with what's going on in Afghanistan and some states in the USA? It's no wonder people think of Gilead when they read certain news items.

beautyandTVisgoodenoughforme · 18/01/2025 17:51

Amandaland is being released soon and I’m convinced the threads are guerilla marketing! Especially as the OPs are posting so much. It’s been over 2 years since the last episode of Motherland and this has got everyone on here talking about it again and lots of people saying they’re going to go watch it now.

Yes maybe. I've only seen it used quite recently and hadn't before then, so maybe because Amandaland is coming up. The thead where I saw it the OP was really labouring the "I know an Amanda" thing and kept repeating it, in case anyone had missed her using it to describe the person.😀

JJZ · 18/01/2025 18:23

Digitalised · 18/01/2025 16:39

It’s my name and I fear it’s going to be used like ‘Karen’ is 🥴

Just be a “Mandy”. Amanda didn’t like “Mandy.”

Ginkypig · 18/01/2025 18:26

Characters from films and tv even books etc are used all the time for quick easy ways to describe a type of person or to emphasise a particular trait as a description.

one example could be oh he is a bit of a Del Boy type. To describe a ducking and diving type of character.

i don’t see what the problem is.

is it because you particularly dislike motherland so the reference offends you?

But that’s the thing about satire. It’s bloody close to the truth. The original purpose of satire was to ‘hold a mirror up to society’.

I once punched someone for calling me Mandy. (This is not as bad as it sounds, but the principle remains).

Angelofmycoins · 18/01/2025 18:29

I got in trouble once for suggesting all the men on the sex board were like Kevin - so understanding

sleetysnowflakes · 18/01/2025 18:34

To be fair I’m more likely to describe myself as doing something “Liz from motherland”

Exactly. Every thing in The Handmaids Tale, the book anyway, is something that was happening to women in the real world, not in one place but each aspect is or was real.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 18/01/2025 17:46

I think it's a perfect description. Amanda is very much a 'type.' We all know one. If you say someone's Amanda from Motherland, everyone who has ever stood at a school gate or been on the PTA instantly gets it.

I'm not sure why it would irritate or offend you. Unless.....

Actually I've never stood at a school gate or been on the PTA & I've still met & suffered an Amanda. She was in a sewing group. shudder

To be fair, Margaret Atwood used things that had already happened as inspiration for that, although I agree with your point.

Edit: I see it as overused, and occasionally misused by people on the internet who invoke The Handmaid's Tale every five minutes about things that aren't relevant. Women losing their rights in the USA and Afghanistan is relevant.

MrsSunshine2b · 18/01/2025 18:46

Motherland is a drama based on real life and is popular because most of us recognise the characters from our own life. We all know an Amanda, a Liz and a Julia and that's why it's funny.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 18/01/2025 18:50

BarbaraHoward · 18/01/2025 17:25

I think the problem might be that MN has a higher rate of Amandas than other online groups. Grin

This was my thought 🤣 and generally MNetters are far more likely to have watched Motherland than the rest of the population.

endofthelinefinally · 18/01/2025 18:52

Margaret Attwood based the book on Afghanistan. Look at the plight of women in Afghanistan today.
I find mumsnet depressing these days.

ManchesterLu · 18/01/2025 18:52

It's only a way of showing what someone is like. What's wrong with that?

it's VERY funny. one of our favourites and we are childfree. it's probably even funnier if you're part of school gate politics and so on.

not JUST Afghanistan. everthing in it reflected women's rights breaches all over the world at different points in time. she said none of it was pulled out of the air. it's all based on something that either is or has been a reality somewhere in the world.
