Bloody motherland again.

Third thread this week where the OP has described someone as “exactly/think Amanda from Motherland”

I’m convinced people think motherland is real and they need to emulate the drama in real life.

Yawn.

OP posts:

It makes perfect sense to bring attention to a topic you find boring 🤔

republicofjam · 18/01/2025 17:13

Slow Saturday?

SouthLondonMum22 · 18/01/2025 17:15

Why do you think it makes people think Motherland is real? How bizarre.

It's an easy way to describe someone. The majority of people will know exactly what they mean.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 18/01/2025 17:16

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/01/2025 17:12

It's when people come on and post wringing their hands about a " Handmaids Tale" and "this has shades of Gilead" my Hmm sensors bristle .

No - they are Made Up

So's Big Brother, but it's still a good metaphor.

Boomer55 · 18/01/2025 17:18

Motherland was very funny, and we all understand who Amanda was. Back in the day, it was Ab Fab and we all knew who Patsy was 🤷‍♀️

Drivingoverlemons · 18/01/2025 16:44

Agree OP. Calling a real woman an ‘Amanda’ = instantly biased AIBU audience.

Using references from popular TV shows has been around for decades.

It's an easily understood descriptor. Can't understand what the problem is

TooManyChristmasCards · 18/01/2025 17:24

I suppose I could use my neighbour Nicola instead of "Amanda"
but no-one else would know who she is so it would make no sense

and it would be offensive, Nicole being you know, a REAL person 😂

she's not, I just made her up

TooManyChristmasCards · 18/01/2025 17:25

Anyone on a parents whatsapp group or a FB local group knows that things are way worst in real life than Motherland anyway

I think the problem might be that MN has a higher rate of Amandas than other online groups. Grin

Wanttoadoptadog · 18/01/2025 17:29

Are you “Joan” OP?

NeddieSeagoonsSteamPoweredTelephone · 18/01/2025 17:36

Digitalised · 18/01/2025 16:39

It’s my name and I fear it’s going to be used like ‘Karen’ is 🥴

I’m with you, sister. Same worry, too.

Oh dear. No. That's not it at all.

3kgNET · 18/01/2025 17:40

It’s not a new thing. It was Ab Fab before, everyone knew who Patsy was.

I’m not from the UK so I couldn’t use Motherland references here, but Amanda is excellent and so are all the other characters.

dynamiccactus · 18/01/2025 17:46

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 18/01/2025 16:36

People are just using it as a shorthand to a personality type, no one thinks it’s real.

So we've had the derogatary "Karen" and now "Amanda" is going to be the new one.

Can't people just use adjectives to describe the behaviour, rather than insulting everyone with that name?

TwigletsAndRadishes · 18/01/2025 17:46

I think it's a perfect description. Amanda is very much a 'type.' We all know one. If you say someone's Amanda from Motherland, everyone who has ever stood at a school gate or been on the PTA instantly gets it.

I'm not sure why it would irritate or offend you. Unless.....

TwigletsAndRadishes · 18/01/2025 17:50

It isn't insulting everyone with that name though, is it? The description applies to a particular type of person, not everyone who was ever called Amanda. It's the character that's the problem, not the name.

Although funnily enough the only Amanda I know is a dead ringer for ML's Amanda. Good figure, long blonde hair, very much an A lister of the school gate crowd, rich husband, beautiful house, glam hobby job. She's an absolutely lovely and very down to earth person though.

beautyandTVisgoodenoughforme · 18/01/2025 17:51

Amandaland is being released soon and I’m convinced the threads are guerilla marketing! Especially as the OPs are posting so much. It’s been over 2 years since the last episode of Motherland and this has got everyone on here talking about it again and lots of people saying they’re going to go watch it now.

Eldermillenialyogi · 18/01/2025 17:51

Hedgerow2 · 18/01/2025 16:32

What an odd thing to say. Amanda in Motherland is a very particular character type so it's a quick and effective way of describing someone. Doesn't mean they think she's real Confused

This.

You ok OP?

TrickyD · 18/01/2025 17:52

My grandson’s school was used as a location for the series. Despite this I have never watched it.

AshCrapp · 18/01/2025 17:52

It's different though. Amanda is based on a character from TV. It would be like describing someone as a Pam from Gavin and Stacey or a Lois from Malcolm in the middle (to name some other well known TV mums who represent a type of mother).

Karen is chosen because it's a name typical of a woman of that age. That's why Karen is a misogynistic term, and Amanda is just a description based on a character.

leftorrightnow · 18/01/2025 17:56

Oh they’re releasing Amanda land? Can’t wait! Love motherland. I feel like all the mums are extreme stereotypes that’s why it’s funny. I feel I see myself in all of them at various times.

It’s completely different. Amanda is a character. It’s no different to saying someone is a Victor Meldrew, Hyacinth Bucket or DelBoy. It’s just a character.

Karen is a misogynistic term to describe middle aged women. There is no original character.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 18/01/2025 17:58

People have always used tv and film references to describe others. You need to get over yourself OP.

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/01/2025 17:58

I always thought (and Im definitely not alone in this from a quick google) that 'Karen' originated from the character of that name in Will & Grace...loud, obnoxious, demanding, narc, etc, middle aged white woman.

As so many users of the term are unaware of Karen the character it has altered somewhat and is now simply a derogatory term for bossy/confident women in many cases.

duc748 · 18/01/2025 17:59

BTW is this new series literally called Amandaland? I assumed that was a joke.
