Reading glasses- wearers, what do you do in bed?

I’ve recently had to get reading glasses and now find I can no longer lie in bed with one ear on the pillow, looking at my book or phone because my glasses leg will get twisted. It’s also uncomfortable so I don’t think that buying cheap glasses will work. what do people do about this?

Is there a solution to this like glasses on a soft headband? Or do I just have to accept a I can only read sitting up now?

I don’t read in bed - I listen to radio, podcasts or audiobooks. I’ve never found a way to lie down with my glasses on but also can’t see how you find that comfy?!

HowardTJMoon · 18/01/2025 08:40

I lie on my back. If I start nodding off the book will tip forwards and smack me in the face. That then wakes me up which I use as a reminder to take my glasses off and go to sleep.

callmebuffy · 18/01/2025 08:44

I stoped reading in bed for this reason.

However seeing this thread has made me google and their does seem to be some solutions out there so I may try!

I read on my Kindle, so I can increase the font when I don’t have my glasses on.

I have the same problem. I don't read in bed anymore.

You can usually get larger print books in the library.

Any tips for headphones that don’t hurt your ears while lying on your side?

I have cheap glasses to use at home, so if when they get twisted from falling asleep I don't care, I just replace them when they get terribly out of alignment. Comfort wise I think I'm just used to it now.

Only use one ear

You mean you can’t see how I used to find reading lying on my side comfy, before I had to wear glasses? I don’t know, it is just my preferred way to cuddle down to go to sleep. I often nod off and drop my book/phone.

Yeah, I find that the glasses dig into my face a bit as well though.

You can get swimming goggles with lenses in for people who can't wear their glasses in the pool and want to go under water. Nice soft band to go round your head...

Get a kindle.
DH reads his kindle in bed and has adjusted the font size so that he doesn't need his glasses to read.

I read on my size while lying down as well BTW.

rupertsscarf · 18/01/2025 09:01

I totally get this and this is why I wear my contact lenses over my glasses. When you just want to lay on your side in bed or have a real slob on the sofa, you're either worried the arms gonna snap off, they're digging into you or they're wonky on your face, which gives me the rage so I can't focus on my book or phone anyway. It sucks

VictorianScreenTime · 18/01/2025 09:02

I still read lying on my side with glasses on. I just sort of tuck the pillow out of the way of my glasses and face- so my head is on the pillow but I tuck the edge of the pillow in under itself so my face is free.
It’s like a pillow cliff edge. My head is still on the cliff but my face is beyond the cliff edge. (This is such a weird post😂)
I sometimes have to manoeuvre a bit so that the pillow isn’t pressing on the back stem of my glasses behind the ear but it is very achievable with practice!

No headphones involved.

Ah OK, I have a husband in bed beside me so that’s a non-starter

Laughing at the image of your contact lenses stuck over your glasses 😂.

I didn’t know lenses were available for long sightedness.

I was very short sighted for years, wore glasses/lenses anll the time and eventually got laser surgery. But I never had any problems reading without vision correction.

You can change the font size on your phone as well.

So do I - we listen to things together, is that an option for you?

It's possibly the glasses, I read in bed with my glasses on but use my cheap Aldi pair, they are thin and a bit bendy so feel comfy, my other ones are just annoying!

PencilsInSpace · 18/01/2025 09:09

I got some really cheap glasses from the pound shop and snapped one arm off.
