Reading glasses- wearers, what do you do in bed?

85 replies

HotCrossBunplease · 18/01/2025 08:31

I’ve recently had to get reading glasses and now find I can no longer lie in bed with one ear on the pillow, looking at my book or phone because my glasses leg will get twisted. It’s also uncomfortable so I don’t think that buying cheap glasses will work. what do people do about this?

Is there a solution to this like glasses on a soft headband? Or do I just have to accept a I can only read sitting up now?

OK, I’ll fess up, it’s Mumsnet on my phone I really want to read in bed, not a book 😂

That’s terrible for your sleep!

So do I - we listen to things together, is that an option for you?

Not really, we spend the evening watching TV together and then he goes straight to sleep. We do actually listen to a lot of the same podcasts but separately, when commuting etc .

I’ve found good and cheap glasses from local pharmacy which are flexible and o can easily read lying sideways now.

Willoo · 18/01/2025 09:20

I have a kindle and make the font bigger

@HotCrossBunplease

😂 what a vision!

I think you can have lenses for most prescriptions now a days.

I find lenses much easier, as glasses aren't also always practical, such as when I'm at the gym. I need to be able to see up close to set the treadmill but my glasses slide down my nose if I workout in them.

@VictorianScreenTime

Thank you also for this wonderful description. I might have to try this too!

You could try pince nez? https://www.tigerspecs.co.uk/reading-glasses/pince-nez/1-75
I just use my kobo or squint a bit- not recommended!

Ha ha I misread that as “I just use my knob!”

So you have lenses that correct long sightedness but don’t interfere with your distance vision? Interesting, must ask the optician next time I go.

I twist my head slightly so only the back of my skull is pressing into the pillow and my ear is only lightly resting on it.

I read on my Kindle, so I can increase the font when I don’t have my glasses on.

Same. I just prefer reading lying on my side! If I’m reading a physical book I just don’t read in bed.

I read in bed in my side with glasses on no problem

You can change the font size on your phone as well.

I just gave that a try. Sadly the font on things like my emails and iPhone menus gets bigger but the font size on the Mumsnet mobile site remains small, I think it has to do with the way that posts are designed to fit on to a phone screen. The accessibility control did indeed say that it only worked with sites that supported increased font size.

@HotCrossBunplease

I'm only long sighted, so only need my glasses or lenses for when I'm working at a screen, reading, on my phone etc.

I wear my contacts all the time whether I am doing close work or not. They don't affect my distance vision at all

Contact lenses
It can also be corrected by wearing contact lenses, which may be a better option if glasses would get in the way of your lifestyle. People with hyperopia usually wear contact lenses which are 'plus' or convex in shape to achieve normal vision. Your optician will be able to advise you on the most suitable type of contact lens for you
I think now though that even if you need verifocals you can sometimes have lenses too but I think it's quite a new thing

That’s wonderful for you, not much help to me though unless you can explain why- high pain threshold. Unusually flexible glasses? Odd-shaped head? 😂

Me too I am only long sighted as my short sightedness was fixed with laser surgery.

Any tips for headphones that don’t hurt your ears while lying on your side?

Snoozeband

largeprintagathachristie · 18/01/2025 10:09

I’m a big read-in-bed reader - it’s how I’ve got to sleep ever since I was 5.

I’m sort sighted and though there’s been increasing kerfuffle with glasses and astigmatism after I turned 40, I didn’t need glasses to read in bed.

until now. And they do have a prescription- they’re not just readers. It’s so annoying and my final drift-off-to-sleep reading phase is on my side.
Cue pillow punching to make a space for the glasses arm as outlined by other posters which only sort of works. I end up with marks on my nose from the pressure - I’ve got new thread veins from pressure from the nosepiece.

Will scour thread for solutions.

BabCNesbitt · 18/01/2025 10:14

I bought these as a Christmas present to myself for this exact reason. They do pinch a bit on the bridge of my nose but you get used to it, and I have the holder stuck to the back of my phone so they’re always handy!

BabCNesbitt · 18/01/2025 10:15

(Yes, they look terrible, but nobody else sees them apart from me and occasionally DCs, who ask me to put them on so they can laugh at me 😁)

Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit · 18/01/2025 10:19

I have increased my font size on my phone and it works on safari too (on which I read mumsnet). Are you on android or iPhone? Maybe we can help with settings

Yes, I also have a sore nose!

iPhone. I went to Accessibility and saw this (pic 1)
when activated it made my emails look like this (pic 2) and the font in the keyboard increased in size but the text in Mumsnet stayed like this (pic 3)

I use MN in safari in the mobile site.
