Reading glasses- wearers, what do you do in bed?

I’ve recently had to get reading glasses and now find I can no longer lie in bed with one ear on the pillow, looking at my book or phone because my glasses leg will get twisted. It’s also uncomfortable so I don’t think that buying cheap glasses will work. what do people do about this?

Is there a solution to this like glasses on a soft headband? Or do I just have to accept a I can only read sitting up now?

At the bottom of the page in the browser bar where you have mumsnet.com there is a box with lines - if you tap that it brings options to enlarge the font which stay as you select until you change again. I have mine on 115%

Lobstercrisps · 18/01/2025 10:40

I take my contact lenses out before I lie down and I can read very close to my face without anything.

I need reading glasses on top of my contact lenses for reading at work/menus/instruction booklets etc.

I do have some reading glasses for wearing without contacts but I save them for plane journeys/hospital where I have to wear actual glasses all the time.

So I lie on my side and read/mumsnet without anything.

Aha! Thank you!

or, rather, curse you for enabling my bed time MN habit after the discomfort of my glasses had started to wean me off 😂

I still read lying on my side with glasses on. I just sort of tuck the pillow out of the way of my glasses and face- so my head is on the pillow but I tuck the edge of the pillow in under itself so my face is free.
It’s like a pillow cliff edge. My head is still on the cliff but my face is beyond the cliff edge. (This is such a weird post😂)
I sometimes have to manoeuvre a bit so that the pillow isn’t pressing on the back stem of my glasses behind the ear but it is very achievable with practice!

THIS accurately describes my nighttime routine, however I do still get a bruise on the bridge of my nose sometimes from my glasses. I routinely fall asleep on my side reading, but always migrate to my back and wake up on my back, sometimes still wearing my glasses.

Now that my late DH is no longer with me, I sometimes fall asleep listening to a podcast aloud (and often do when sleeping through the day for nightshift), however I did find a sleep mask/headphone contraption for my DS who is AuADHD, and shares a room with his brother, which allows him to listen to white/brown/pink noise, or a podcast when falling asleep, which has massively improved his insomnia without disturbing his brother.

Contacts are a great get-around, unless like me you have chronically dry sensitive eyes that don't cope well sleeping in them (even the ones that are meant to be worn long term).

Apologies for my foggy brain - what size font do you have on this? As I can't read it without glasses, so I'm trying to figure out just how big I'd need to go (even though it's often books or other forums I'm trying to read). Many thanks

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/01/2025 10:57

I’m always reading in bed - usually Kindle but also books - lying on my side. I don’t find it an issue, but the Kindle is easier. Always cheap reading glasses too.

She told me it was 115%.

What about a monocle? I occasionally use one from https://www.monoclemadness.co.uk/. It saved my holiday when my glasses broke while I was on an art appreciation trip in Vienna, but it also works for reading in bed, whatever your choice of reading matter.

Oh my good ness I LOVE the idea of becoming a toff with a monocle!
Interesting that all the pics are men though.

I have varies, but I can read without them as long as I put the page close enough to my face, so I do that when lying down - obviously it will depend on your prescription whether that's worth trying - probably helps that in the distance part of my prescription I am a very high minus.

maudelovesharold · 18/01/2025 11:07

Does no-one else sit upright with pillows plumped up behind them to read in bed? I can’t imagine getting in a comfortable position if I was trying to read lying down, with or without glasses!

RampantIvy · 18/01/2025 11:07

I have hated being short sighted all my life, but it is a boon for reading small print and reading in bed without my glasses.

That’s their problem! I’ve had mine for about 5 years - used to occasionally use it in the classroom when I was a teacher, and the kids loved it.

PeppiKoala · 18/01/2025 11:12

Get a kindle and make the font massive 😂

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 18/01/2025 11:13

Thanks @HotCrossBunplease!! I'm off to try to figure this out. (I'm in Aus and about to head to bed, phone in hand and looking to avoid another bruised nose).

It is 115% as if I go any bigger then the lines run off the page and I have to scroll about to read a page, if you know what I mean? I can hold the phone horizontally to get more on, or use an iPad or tablet for a bigger screen to go higher than 115%
With a kindle or iPad I go much larger for comfort.

I think there seems to be a resistance to kindles on this thread.

IMO they are a game changer.

I can read at night with the light off and don't disturb DH.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 18/01/2025 11:15

@LoserWinner, out of interest - is it uncomfortable, scrunching your eye socket up to hold a monocle and do you need to read with one eye?

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 18/01/2025 11:16

@Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit - thank you! I'm seriously considering investing in an iPad to help me out with this. It really is a bane.

TribulationPeriwinkle · 18/01/2025 11:30

Kindle in bed. But if you want to listen to something comfortably, a Snoozeband is the way to go.

Exactly this.
I find a thin very squishy pillow helps. I couldn't manage to hold a book but kindle is fine. Although you can increase the font I prefer glasses.

I have cheap glasses to use at home, so if when they get twisted from falling asleep I don't care, I just replace them when they get terribly out of alignment. Comfort wise I think I'm just used to it now.

This, though I've always thought that a pair of glasses with elastic round the head like babies ones would be brilliant

PeppiKoala · 18/01/2025 11:34

@RampantIvy I bloody love mine!
