What the heck has caused this?

Went to take out a pair of pyjamas this evening and the hem of them has a big piece missing. I can't, for the life of me, figure out what's caused it. I would have noticed if I'd ripped them, and they are PJs so it's not like I wear them outside. The bottom looks a little worn and frayed but the cut is quite clean (albeit jagged). Haven't worn these for a few months and I wonder if it's possible a squirrel (?)tore off a piece while they dried outside. I would understand a rip but not a whole piece missing. Do squirrels do that?

What the heck has caused this?

They've been caught in the BBC washing machine door

There would be evidence if it was an animal

I do have a child but this isn't the sort of thing they would do - not overly interested in Scissors and at 6 not that brainless anymore

Not sure why you are confused, the poster clearly just meant washing machine door and some sort of autocorrect or mistyping is going on. I would also suggest the most plausible reason is they got caught in the washing machine door.

The BBC is just letting us down in so many ways these days.

I literally didn't know. I thought it was a typo but it referred to a specific type of machine or door or something

Could have been the washing machine but it's s bit odd I didn't see the scrap of fabric come out (I do all our laundry).
@Conkerjar 😂
