Uterine polyps a bit confused!

Had a scan due to a bleed between periods (I’m 49) scan showed a polyp. Letter to doctor said uterus looked normal and so did ovaries. I had a gyne appointment just to discuss my options and they took a biopsy which k wasn’t expecting and she said I would get another date for the polyp removal depending on the biopsy result. Now I’m panicking they have seen cancer or something as why take a biopsy? Is this standard to do this before polyp removal? The doc who did my scan said my uterus lining was 10mm which was ok but now I’m wondering …has anyone else been in a similar position and had a biopsy ?

I think it is standard. Last year I had it done 3 times. Once when they found a polyp, again when they tried to remove it then again when they did remove it.
All 3 came back clear. They have now found a cyst and I am waiting for blood test results which measure the amount of the protein CA 125 (cancer antigen 125) in the blood.

Thank you. My ca125 was 27 so in normal limits. I was just confused I had a biopsy of the womb lining before the polyps were even removed

completely normal. Doesn't mean they think it's anything terrible, but it's to make sure a simple polypectomy's the right thing to do. They'll send the whole polyp off as well once that's done.

Cheers! Do they still test the polyps after removal? Do you happen to know how likely they are to be cancerous if the uterine lining is benign? Sorry for questions the gyne was bit very approachable to ask her anything just wanted me in and out. I guess they check for cancer first as they may want to do a hysterectomy, hoping if it is they have caught it early. X

So sorry I see you have already said they send the polyps off too. Bloody hell more waiting for results then. Feels like my life is on hold

Does anyone know how long biopsy results take?

Mine took ages the first time and I had to chase it up. But then I found the results on my NHS app within a few days the next time.

Thank you I have the app so will keep checking that!

Still no results. I spoke to someone today who had polyps removed and she said she didn’t have a biopsy first they just tested the polyp which has made me think they must have suspected something?

Polyps are very common and usually benign.

Boomerangbabe · 22/01/2025 22:56

Thank you. I haven’t had them removed yet but a biopsy was performed on my lining last week and I’m not sure why as scan apparently didn’t show it was thick. I realise the polyps will be tested when removed but not sure why biopsy my womb lining. I couldn’t really ask many questions as she wasn’t approachable

Also how did people get their results was it by phone or posh or on the app?

Hi there I really hope you are getting on OK. I have just had a biopsy from a polyp and uterine lining so waiting for results. Apparently the polyp was too big to remove when they took the biopsy so they will wait for results before discussing removal. Thought it sounded similar to you! I hope you have had your results back and all is clear?
