For me it was silver balls on cupcakes. Such a simple thing but we didn't have them very often, so whenever I saw some on a cake I'd bubble with excitement. I bought a cake today with some on and I swear, I was five years old again!

Angel delight

Butterscotch Grin

Instant Whip was a poor relation .

foreverbasil · 17/01/2025 16:32

This may have been mentioned...sticky back plastic. We lived rurally and it seemed impossibly unattainable whenever mentioned on Blue Peter. My auntie bought me a roll for my birthday. I really think I have never had a more exciting present 😂

New Crayola colouring pens and a colouring book. Would spend all my pocket money on those pattern pads from Woolworths.

A pick and mix from Woolworths.

New school uniform at the start of the year.

Avon set of soaps in a box .
I had squirrel shaped soap , DSis had kittens in a stocking shaped .

And bath cubes - the paper seal , gold wrapping and their were two blocks ( making up each cube) then you had to decide to be frugal and use half or say Be A Devil and use both

I bought some birds in a nest soaps from Avon from eBay recently, and it made me so happy.

Oh yes animal bars! Also loved Pink Panther strawberry chocolate bars. Used to get them from a vending machine at DF’s squash club for 2p! Also remember the joy of getting a dispenser with miniature Dairy Milk bars in it.

What a fun thread! Mine were:

Fancy stickers - especially furry or shiny ones.
Choosing contact paper to cover my exercise books at the beginning of the new school year.
Choosing new books from the Scholastic catalogue.

Meltingslush · 17/01/2025 18:15

Colouring books , crayons and a selection pack at Christmas, in the days when they were huge ! . My grandparents coal
Fire and eating fish and chips with crusty bread and butter in front of it .

The one cherry in a tin of fruit cocktail, my Dad would cut it up between us five kids so we all got a tiny part each 🤣

HAHAHAH...my brother and I used to fight over the cherry 😂

heymammy · 17/01/2025 18:35

I've just remembered "transfers"...wee pictures that you could scribble over with a pencil so the picture transferred to your sheet of paper 😍

Also, those really thin metal bangles that came in all colours c1985 and you would wear about 20 up you arm. Stylish.

Bronnley toiletries, especially the lemon shaped soaps.
Gathering the contents of my Brownie uniform pocket, including a 2p for the phonebox
Collecting leather bookmarks, postcards, stamps & pin badges
DM turning my sheet down when I was poorly & bringing me a tray in bed
DF driving a little faster over a bridge for me & DBro ( we would always ask to go home that way after visiting our Great Aunties)
Being let loose in DG’s dressing up box
Listening to Radio 4 on GF’s big wooden radiogram whilst eating Kelloggs Variety cereal. Always tasted better from those little boxes!
Dropping coins into our friends’ wishing well
Munching jelly cubes
Me & DBro having our own tree to cultivate. And miniature garden gnomes
Being deliciously terrified of the Daleks
Piano lessons with a lovely teacher
Collecting ladybirds during the super hot summer of 76
My orange Raleigh Chopper
The smell of coal tar soap in my DG’s bathroom
Jumping from the top of my DM’s sewing cupboard & landing on a pile of cushions
The excitement of being in a house with 3 floors
This thread is great - I could go on & on! So many wonderful memories.

DBro & I being allowed Shandy Bass as little kids.

Beryl23 · 17/01/2025 18:59

Onken frufoo yoghurts, with the toys in the middle.

Being able to spell my name with Alphabites. Having two letters of the same in the first name was annoying. My friends who also have two of the same letter (different letters) had the same issue.

Though this does happen now. Seeing a cat outside and it comes up wanting a fuss. Many of the cats run away.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/01/2025 19:02

When a box of chocolates was a little bit under the weight they put a tiny tablet of chocolate in , hidden under one of the others .

BaconGrill ......but sometimes my Mum would try and kid us by cooking Spam .
BaconGrill was salty, chewy , slightly sticky . Grilled to a slightly crispy edge.
Span was flabby and like eating cotton wool. Grill it to Kingdom Come , won;t improve it .

She used to say "It;s exactly the same"

No it isn't . Both pig based . There the similarity ends !

I used to collect these little rubber dolls that were about 2" high.
They were dressed in different outfits and jointed with elastic. I named them all and had about 50 when they stopped selling them.
I made them all a matching outfit which they wore and they stood along my windowsill.
They cost 55p each, so I would save up any money I found or got to buy them.

Magic Painting books. Do they still do them?

My ex got after school detention for bringing a can of this in his packed lunch. His DF said to the head of year "You need to drink an Olympic swimming pool's worth to get drunk - you will die of drinking too much fluid first"

RabbitsRock · 17/01/2025 19:07

Anyone remember Breakfast slices? So happy when we had them!

Sticky backed plastic was just Sellotape wasn't it? As it was the BBC they couldn't use brand names so used that weird phrase instead.
Did you mean double sided tape? I got my first roll aged about 40 and was beside myself.

Phineyj · 17/01/2025 19:21

No it wasn't tape, it was a kind of sheet vinyl with adhesive on the back. It came in plain colours and patterns.

They did used to frequently mention double sided tape though!

foreverbasil · 17/01/2025 19:23

No, that was sticky tape. Sticky back plastic was a large sheet of plastic. It was crucial for making kitchen floors for Sunday dolls out of cardboard boxes. It must have had an another name. Was it fablon?

foreverbasil · 17/01/2025 19:24

Sindy damn autocorrect
