For me it was silver balls on cupcakes. Such a simple thing but we didn't have them very often, so whenever I saw some on a cake I'd bubble with excitement. I bought a cake today with some on and I swear, I was five years old again!

A packet of crisps with the little salt sachet inside.

Only my nan bought them so it was once a fortnight when we visited and getting to sprinkle your own salt over your crisps was just THE BEST thing ever.

We never had these and I was always jealous of kids with smiths crisps

MaryGreenhill · 16/01/2025 20:30

Books , comics , anything to read.

LionRumpus · 16/01/2025 20:30

The taste of stolen chocolate

splothersdog · 16/01/2025 20:30

1/2 penny sweets. Seeing my Grandads Green Vauxhall viva parked up unexpectedly outside school. A butterfly net. Looking for shells

GreenMarigold · 16/01/2025 20:32

The post coming through the door - could be a letter from a pen friend!

My mum hanging my school clothes on the radiators so they were warm to put on.

TroysMammy · 16/01/2025 20:32

Postcards and my Nana's button box. It looked like a treasure chest and I loved fiddling with the buttons.

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 16/01/2025 20:33

Fortune teller fish from a cracker or a party bag.

Fontainebleau007 · 16/01/2025 20:33

I loved the silver balls on cupcakes too!
The Frufoo yoghurt I absolutely loved it. Pick n mix, those plastic pencil cases you could collect from magazines, pen rubbers, gel pens, my room that was full of everything dolphins! 🐬

Glitter, especially blue glitter.

Some little bottles of coloured bath foam my father brought from a hotel, all different colours, very fancy bottles.

Light up yo-yo

Any light up items sold by hawkers at nighttime events (halo, wand, sword etc)

My red ballet shoes

My Raleigh Dido bike

These fairy lights:

Silver glitter for cards still makes my heart race with happiness and reminds me of Christmas!

The electric lights in my Sylvanian families house

Little houses and shops made with Lego with lights

The icecream van music and excitement. The possibility of an icecream.

The freedom on my bike

Fontainebleau007 · 16/01/2025 20:34

@TheYearOfSmallThings those fairy lights yes!

DevilledEgg · 16/01/2025 20:35

I've just remembered another one....polos! Remember the golden polo promotion? I'd spend all my pocket money on packs of polos looking for a golden polo!

The one cherry in a tin of fruit cocktail, my Dad would cut it up between us five kids so we all got a tiny part each 🤣

My mum's lemon meringue pie.

I made it once. It was horrifically difficult, used every pan in the kitchen and I couldn't get it to set. Respect to my mum.

Wildwalksinjanuary · 16/01/2025 20:36

The library and heaving back my amazing stash

I always got a screwball from the ice cream van. Absolutely loved the manky frozen bubble gum at the end 😂😂😂

My collections of things. They included:

erasers
carrier bags (!)
kylie memorabilia
and, as a younger child, the real (unconnected) phone with a dial that my dad brought home for me to play offices with, plus books of paper with carbon copies and a date stamp and ink pad

gettingolderbutcooler · 16/01/2025 20:37

Penny Puppy Walker.

Waltzers · 16/01/2025 20:37

Looking at dolls house furniture! There was a toy shop in the next town along that sold the furniture for my Lundby dolls house. I used to make most of the furniture from match boxes and anything else I could utilise but my dolls house was my pride and joy and every once in a while we'd visit the town and start walking in the direction of the toy shop and my little heart would be beating so fast in anticipation that I was going to be alllowed to even look, never mind buy anything!

GreenMarigold · 16/01/2025 20:37

I also loved all the competitions that the crisp companies did. I remember winning cash in Walkers and really random stuff from Nik Naks packets.

WhoWhereWhatWhy · 16/01/2025 20:38

Buying new stationery for a new academic year

Arglefraster · 16/01/2025 20:39

Being allowed to use the pinking shears to cut up the old Christmas cards to make tags. They're mine now & I still love them (but don't let anyone use them on paper!!)

FurryBalonz · 16/01/2025 20:39

Another one for silver balls (and those jelly diamonds) on cupcakes.

Making jam tarts with my mum.
Actually eating jam tarts made by my grandma (hers were the best)
Sucking a curly wurly (they were much nicer in the 80s)
Practising for the Christmas carol concert at school.
Seeing the Christmas lights and decorations everywhere.
Seaside holidays especially Cornwall.
Hearing my guinea pigs purr.
Magic steps shoes!
