What to do with mackerel?

Asked my DH to get something for supper and he got mackerel fillets 🤔(not the peppered sort) how shall I cook them and what shall I serve with them. I hate oily fish, especially mackerel. Other things in the house include rocket, cucumber, red onion, a leek, broccoli, some wizened lemons rice and potatoes and that's just about it.

There are an assortment of condiments too

If you hate oily fish you’re not going to find a way to enjoy this meal I’m afraid.

I’d put lots of salt on the skin and grill it. Serve with lemon squeezed over it, zest the lemon and mix that in with the rocket with some salt and olive oil. Maybe boil some potatoes and serve with butter alongside?

Do you have cream cheese?

id grill/fry and cool and some. Chilli and mash and put on a cracker

or quickly boil some potatoes/mash/ add flour and make potato pancakes

Do you mean raw, fresh fillets or smoked ones which aren't peppered?
I'd suggest DH cook and prep whatever meal he had in mind when he bought them 😉

GiddyRobin · 16/01/2025 19:46

I'd make some sort of warm mackerel salad with rice. Cube and fry the potatoes with leek /onion and broccoli. Mix the rocket through at the end and flake the mackerel through. Squeeze of lemon.

Or potato mash with leek, mackerel fillet on the side, steamed or roasted broccoli. Maybe a side salad if you wanted to use up the rocket and cucumber. I'd probably mix some rocket through the mash because that's tasty.

Fish cakes!
I made mackerel fish cakes last night, funnily enough.
Flake the fish and mix into mashed potatoes. You want more potato than fish. Same weight, then half as much again.
Add some of the red onion, very finely chopped, salt, pepper, and horseradish sauce if you have any.
Shape into patties and fry gently.
Serve with wizened lemon wedges and rocket.

If it’s already cooked, I’d mash it with lemon juice, cream cheese and horseradish sauce and serve it with jacket potatoes and salad.

ZingAZingAaaah · 16/01/2025 19:48

@BaronessBomburst your idea is better than mine. Great idea!

BaronessBomburst · 16/01/2025 19:50

I'm presuming that the mackerel is already cooked, as you said fillets OP.

Grilled with cumin, delicious. Or chopped into a warm potato salad.

TheWashingMachine · 16/01/2025 19:56

Thank you all for your wonderful ideas, going for the fishcakes. With a rocket salad.

I'm also going to wear a hat while doing it so my hair doesn't stink of fish.😂

Huh? Fillets are just fillets, nothing in the word implies cooked or uncooked.

Like if I say chicken thigh you can’t tell if it’s cooked or not.

BaronessBomburst · 16/01/2025 20:03

I've never seen a raw mackerel fillet. Not saying they don't exist but I've never seen one.
If I want raw mackerel I have to buy a whole fish; they come fresh or frozen.

So they do exist! 😂

Dh went to the local M&S, Hhe said he bought them because they are not farmed but still sustainable... he is not usually an environmental warrior

Raw mackerel is amazing. Grill them with boiled or fried potatoes.

They are far too nice for fishcakes.

I had some with a potato and vegetable one-pan roast.

Can your DH not cook?

LucieChardon · 16/01/2025 20:27

We had our mackerel filets tempura'd and deep fried - delicious, much better than a normal beer batter.

But in a fuckton of packaging! Eejit

happysunr1se · 16/01/2025 21:23

A raw mackerel fillet is fantastic eaten as a burger; pan fry and then put in a bun with raw white onion, a squeeze of lemon and loads of mayonnaise!

TheWashingMachine · 16/01/2025 21:32

He went to M&S because it's the nearest shop to us and he has a sore knee so it was the best fish available there...

It was actually very tasty and adding rocket to the mash was a great idea. Thanks 😊

Can't beat grilled/pan fried mackerel fillets with potatoes / mash and salad! And super healthy and cheap at that!
