What to do when you find someone smelly?

It's my H. He bloody smells and has done for a good year. It's started getting worse and worse over the last few weeks

Not of BO. Not of anything like that. He is a very clean man that washes with good routine and is hygienic.

But he stinks. He smells of this weird, sweet smell that smells of rotting flesh at the same time. I can't even describe it. It's horrendous. Like a sweet sickly smell that also smells like a manky wound Blush

He won't listen to me. He's otherwise a very considerate and nice kind of guy. But he isn't listening and is starting to take offence

I got a whiff of him helping put some shopping away and walked into the loo to cry with frustration because he won't listen to me.

I know some health conditions can cause a weird smell but surely after a year of this going on, he'd be symptomatic?

Nothing wrong with his general health at all.

What on earth could it be?! Driving me insane and he's lovely, but I feel rage whenever I smell this smell and want to leave the room in a rage. Instead, I often just bottle it up but it's making me want to spend as little time with him as possible which is awful and he doesn't deserve that

Diabetes or chronic uti?

howtotameaflyingcrankypants · 15/01/2025 21:45

I meant I thought UTI's were generally worse in men so how can he go a year with no symptoms?

He pees normal, regular amounts. All a normal shade, I have asked him when slyly trying to work out what the hell is going on Blush

OP, I’d still strongly encourage him to visit the GP. This sounds like a noticeable change from a year ago and it isn’t related to hygiene, as you say, he takes care of himself in that regard.

StMarie4me · 15/01/2025 21:46

Ask him to see his GP.

Springflowersmakeforbetterhours · 15/01/2025 21:46

Maybe he is worried what a Dr could tell him?

howtotameaflyingcrankypants · 15/01/2025 21:50

So he's being really cagey with me if I bring it up, let alone mention a GP

I've said it a few times and he looks at me like I've got two heads! And talking a foreign language. He won't bloody listen

I feel a separation coming on. Cause? Husband smells of fouls sickly sweet smell I can't actually describe properly Blush

It's not the showering. He's very clean and probably the cleanest man I've ever met!

It's like it's in his pores and breath constantly, even after a wash there's hint of it. Within hours, he stinks. If he fell asleep and wakes up, it's worse

If he drinks alcohol, which is not often, the smell is so bad I cannot stand to be nearby and make myself busy elsewhere because of it

I'm shafting to wonder if it's all in my head. But I've never smelt it on anyone else I spend time with

He's not low carbing, or anything like that is he? Ketosis can be whiffy AF.

Has anyone else mentioned it?

WhatTheKey · 15/01/2025 22:02

Hmm. Is he definitely not drinking behind your back OP? My ex stank exactly like this after even one drink... It was sweet and rotting and made me want to heave.

DramaAlpaca · 15/01/2025 22:07

A couple of things occur to me:

How old are you, OP? Perimenopause can cause you to find your partner's smell unpleasant.

Has anybody else close to your DH noticed this?

I know MN won't approve of this AT ALL, but I'll take the flaming. On one occasion when DH resisted seeing his GP about something I thought was important, I rang the surgery on his behalf and made an appointment for him. He went along like an obedient little lamb (probably because he felt it was less hassle than cancelling it and facing me afterwards) and the problem (yes, I was right) got dealt with.

squirrelnutcartel · 15/01/2025 22:08

Could it be a fungal infection? Is he overweight? It does sound like it's related to drinking alcohol though if it gets worse after a drink. It's not healthy whatever it is and he needs to see a doctor.

Heyheyitsanotherday · 15/01/2025 22:10

Can anyone else smell it? Could it be more your sense of smell than him? Not meaning that rudely but just for consideration.
otherwise op I’d be honestly concerned and would be trying to convince him to visit the gp

Yeah he does drink within limits but not every day and he smells of it every day, just worse when I see him with the drink

Glad to see someone else has smelt this awful smell before. Is it just some people metabolise alcohol differently?

I must be going mad though BECAUSE MY DAD is an alcoholic, a very hardened one that still works 14 hour days and drinks in old age... why has he never smelt like this sickly sweet rotting smell? He's smelt of alcohol, even stale alcohol Envy but never ever like H

I know when he is drinking and don't think he's hiding anything due to his job type and seeing him all the time at home clearly not sneaking in drinks

He's 34. I am in my late 20s

Pretty sure I'm not pregnant and if I am it's an elephant baby because it's been over a year now

Can anyone else smell it? Have you got a discrete friend you could ask?

SoeurFayre · 15/01/2025 22:15

Before my daughter discovered she was lactose intolerant she had a smell about her. I presume it was something to do with not digesting all the milk she was drinking. As soon as she stopped taking milk the smell went. She was 10 at the time so I knew exactly how clean she was.

Could it be a digestive issue?

Ivesaidenough · 15/01/2025 22:17

Bit unlikely I know, but could he be intolerant to wheat or dairy? My DP is intolerant to both, and gets a sweet smell after drinking any alcohol.

GooseMoose2 · 15/01/2025 22:17

It’s not his mouth ?

That sort of smell can come from cavities or gum disease.

lissie123 · 15/01/2025 22:18

Certain body odours have been linked to specific diseases such Parkinson’s and diabetes, but I’m no doctor. Perhaps more investigations are needed by a doctor.

HenDoNot · 15/01/2025 22:19

Is he overweight with folds of skin or lots of creases? Could it be some kind of fungal skin thing?

Has anyone else noticed the smell or just you?

TinyRebel · 15/01/2025 22:20

The smell you’re describing sounds exactly like diabetic ketoacidosis, but I’m sure he’d be seriously ill by now if it’s been going on as long as you say.
