What to do when you find someone smelly?

It's my H. He bloody smells and has done for a good year. It's started getting worse and worse over the last few weeks

Not of BO. Not of anything like that. He is a very clean man that washes with good routine and is hygienic.

But he stinks. He smells of this weird, sweet smell that smells of rotting flesh at the same time. I can't even describe it. It's horrendous. Like a sweet sickly smell that also smells like a manky wound Blush

He won't listen to me. He's otherwise a very considerate and nice kind of guy. But he isn't listening and is starting to take offence

I got a whiff of him helping put some shopping away and walked into the loo to cry with frustration because he won't listen to me.

I know some health conditions can cause a weird smell but surely after a year of this going on, he'd be symptomatic?

Nothing wrong with his general health at all.

What on earth could it be?! Driving me insane and he's lovely, but I feel rage whenever I smell this smell and want to leave the room in a rage. Instead, I often just bottle it up but it's making me want to spend as little time with him as possible which is awful and he doesn't deserve that

Does he have any other health symptoms? Stomach pain, peeing a lot, weight loss or gain, swellings, headache, bowel problems etc? Does he eat a lot of one particular type of food? Does he pee a lot overnight?

Does he visit the dentist regularly? What's his oral hygiene like? Does he floss? Tonsil stones can cause a rotten breath.

Greyish2025 · 15/01/2025 22:32

Is it mainly from his breath or his pores or can you tell

LegoTherapy · 15/01/2025 22:36

I'm thinking fungal skin infection. The cat has this smell due to a skin condition. Or possibly diabetes. Either way he needs to see his GP. Is he overweight?

Yes this is a brutal smell, someone at work has this issue. I would describe that as more of an "old earring back" sort of smell though rather than sickly sweet

He's 34. I am in my late 20s

Pretty sure I'm not pregnant and if I am it's an elephant baby because it's been over a year now

You're in your 20s and you haven't had sex for a year....?

Bigger issues in your relationship, or maybe a sign of some of the big issues?

mondaytosunday · 15/01/2025 22:45

A friend of mine e smelled like rotten flesh. Turns out he had an infected duodenum.

WTF?? I think you have a reading comprehension problem.

She's been noticing the unpleasant smell for a year, therefore it can't be blamed on her having a more sensitive sense of smell due to pregnancy.

EdgeofSeventy · 15/01/2025 22:56

After your first post I thought weed or vape.
Then you said pores and breath and mentioned no sex.
Could well be diabetes.
I am diabetic and can attest to the weird sweaty smell and death breath when it's uncontrolled. Thankfully I've only myself to disgust.
If he won't see a Dr you decide if you want to continue sharing your space and life with a man who doesn't give a shit about his health.

Endofyear · 15/01/2025 22:58

He definitely needs to see the GP. You need to tell him firmly that the smell is unbearable and you're very concerned. Don't take no for an answer. It's GP or separation until he sees sense.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 15/01/2025 23:01

The smell you describe, and the fact that it’s worse after sleeping, could be the onset of diabetes. It’s important that he gets checked out. If he’s loathe to do this, is there anyone you trust, who you could speak to? His parents? Sibling?

I read it as they did. It says that they haven’t had sex for a year.

Trainors · 15/01/2025 23:20

I remember a dentist friend telling me of a gum condition that has a very distinctive smell.

Moier · 15/01/2025 23:28

This could be life threating. My friends Husband was the same..even l noticed the sickly sweet smell... he refused to see GP.. took an whole year of nagging until he became really ill and collapsed.. he had kidney and liver disease.

I read it as the smell has been going on for over a year, hence why she says the baby would be the size of an elephant if she started smelling it a year ago.

IdyllicLandscape · 15/01/2025 23:29

This has been shared on here before and I definitely noticed it on my husband. A sickly sweet oily unpleasant smell primarily from his head. Fortunately it seems to be in decline in his early 50s.

An elephant baby has a longer gestation period, hence the term, to refer to an impossible length pregnancy.

CorsicaDreaming · 16/01/2025 00:18

@howtotameaflyingcrankypants - this is probably way off, but the fact he is so reluctant to go to his GP made me wonder, so I just thought I'd put it out there

I've known of two people who had a persistent sickly sweet smell and they were both heroin addicts. The usual perception of heroin addiction as affecting only homeless people or those on the edge of society can be very wrong - sometimes addicts have normal jobs and families etc.

It's probably wrong, but I just thought I'd flag it up.

tolerable · 16/01/2025 00:55

p-re his pupils often pinned?tiny?

tolerable · 16/01/2025 01:00

@CorsicaDreaming was getting to that oh my triggerin trauma script. yup.not saying this guy for sure. i knw tht dnce tho.

endofthelinefinally · 16/01/2025 01:03

My first thought is kidney disease. He needs to see GP. Renal failure can develop very slowly over years.

caringcarer · 16/01/2025 01:08

I think I've heard that people with Parkinson's disease produce more sebum and that smells. Not everyone can smell it but some people have a very sensitive sense of smell. Make him go to his GP.

2pence · 16/01/2025 01:13

Does he smell like Pear Drops? Untreated diabetes can have a similar smell.

magicstar1 · 16/01/2025 01:21

I bet it's diabetes. My DH had the same sweet sickening smell and it turns out he's type 2 diabetic.

You can get testing kits in the pharmacy but he needs to see his GP.

IsThisTheWayMyArmadillo · 16/01/2025 01:31

Wow, there's a lot of smelly people around this week. I think this is the 4th thread about smelly people I've seen today. Is there a full moon or something!
