What to do when you find someone smelly?

It's my H. He bloody smells and has done for a good year. It's started getting worse and worse over the last few weeks

Not of BO. Not of anything like that. He is a very clean man that washes with good routine and is hygienic.

But he stinks. He smells of this weird, sweet smell that smells of rotting flesh at the same time. I can't even describe it. It's horrendous. Like a sweet sickly smell that also smells like a manky wound Blush

He won't listen to me. He's otherwise a very considerate and nice kind of guy. But he isn't listening and is starting to take offence

I got a whiff of him helping put some shopping away and walked into the loo to cry with frustration because he won't listen to me.

I know some health conditions can cause a weird smell but surely after a year of this going on, he'd be symptomatic?

Nothing wrong with his general health at all.

What on earth could it be?! Driving me insane and he's lovely, but I feel rage whenever I smell this smell and want to leave the room in a rage. Instead, I often just bottle it up but it's making me want to spend as little time with him as possible which is awful and he doesn't deserve that

Can anyone else smell it? You haven't answered this question yet.

Nobody has said they can - But his colleagues probably very unlikely to pass comment, especially when it's not something obvious like BO smell

I don't know his friends very well, and he doesn't see much of them anymore really due to caring commitments between us

Family don't see him that often and my mum and MIL lost their sense of smell in their teens!

Teeth?

MushMonster · 16/01/2025 13:51

Cavity? That would be my first guess.
Any little spots anywhere that may be infected, but not giving grief?
Metabolic issues? He would need yhe doctor with this one.
Is he eating too much of something like asparagus, basil, garlic, green thai curry..?

Are your DC old enough to ask if they can smell it? My DH sometimes gets an awful sickly sweet smell, almost like someone's left the gas pouring out of the hob without lighting it, but also sort of... fleshy at the same time. His is due to acid reflux.

That sounds like the stench of an alcoholic - like rotting fruit, sickly and cloying.

From what I remember, it comes if they haven't had a drink for a day or so (and in my experience, was always worse when they were habitually chugging down superstrength lager at room temperature in the few minutes in the bathroom, looking for something in the loft or shed or fixing/cleaning/baking something that meant the kitchen kickboards were suddenly loose and you weren't allowed to go in there at the same time.

Does he get very sweaty at night at all? That's usually after 2-3 days.

I will also add, what's a GP going to say?

'Yeah, hi there. I've got a completely healthy diet and I'm in good shape. I'm 30 something, urine and bowels fine. Sleep fine. All fine. But please! Run reads because my wife says I stink'

Surely a GP is going to be a bit Hmm if the only symptom he can report is one person saying he smells funny

It's very possible the GP will smell it too.

It could be Parkinson's. They've recently discovered there's a very specific odour released by people with Parkinson's that is exactly as you described, sweet & rotting flesh.
I know as I have it. Comes & goes for me. I get it about once a month for about 10 days. Makes me feel sick

Please don't assume that everyone who smells like this, is an alcoholic! I have Parkinson's and about 40% of the time I emit a sickly sweet smell that is typical of Parkinson's. I'd be horrified if people were assuming I was an alcoholic! I don't even drink!!!!

FIL has Parkinson's. It's completely different to the cans of Tennants Extra two days ago stench.

HollyBerryz · 16/01/2025 18:47

Did he start any new medication around the time the smell started? My dh had an awful smell about him when on some meds once.

BlondeMamaToBe · 16/01/2025 18:48

Don’t worry about what the GP will say.

When I went because I thought I stunk they couldn’t have been nicer. I had a good check over and she said that she had been incredibly close to me and that I smelt lovely and she would have been very honest if I smelt bad.
Like I said mine was my sinuses - which took well over a year before I stopped having bad whiffs following a bad case of the flu.

Whatever the reason is they will be happy to get to the bottom of it. Maybe you should have a check over too if it’s only you that can smell him.

Normallynumb · 16/01/2025 19:07

The obvious one is Diabetes but he would've been obviously more unwell over time
A pharmacist can do a finger prick blood sugar test
Reflux might be a cause
It's difficult if he won't see a gp
In older people there can be a particular odour called Nonenal.

He's not low carbing, or anything like that is he? Ketosis can be whiffy AF.

This ..... It can give off an awful smell. It can also be s symptom of illness. He should go to the doctor
