To think toasters are annoying and impossible to clean properly?

How do you toast your bread? My old toaster just died and am considering not replacing it as I find it so difficult to keep up with the cleaning, even if removing the trays, shaking upside down etc, crumbs will always stay in.
We do eat a fair amount of toasted bread but was thinking maybe the oven or just a hot pan will do?

How^^ does one clean a toaster?
Other than taking the crumb tray out and shaking the toaster over the bin, and giving the outside a wipe down every year once in a while, what else is there to do?

Well, after Mousegate I disinfected the whole thing by kind of poking dettol wipes inside with a chopstick. Not intending to do it again though.

The outside

Right, but what is actually on your toaster that needs wiping (every other day, no less)?

Amazed there isn't some sort of stiff little brush you could do the insides with. In the Lakeland catalogue.

I will not have a toaster in my home , I have a proper eye level gas grill.
But there is a bastard toaster at work and we use a stiff bottle brush to clean it
Obviously make sure it's stone cold before poking melty plastic things in it.

We have the Sage mini oven toaster, I loves it and toasts bread exactly to your choice and is easy to clean.

I don't think I have ever cleaned a toaster! I've had a classic Dualit for about 20 years, and it's brilliant.

@LoremIpsumCici Yikes how awful :(

But........if you think about how many of us (most households judging by this thread) rarely pay their toaster much attention compared to how rarely a toaster related disaster happens - I think odds on toaster disasters are rare even though most of us are clearly pretty lazy about cleaning out toasters.
Cleaning it weekly and several times in between is OTT.

When my toaster starts to smoke as if it's about to catch fire, I give it a good battering over the sink and empty the crumb tray. Liking the sound of toast from a panini press. I'm sure someone on here said they made toast in their air fryer.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/01/2025 21:34

Oh yes, we have a panini press which is used every day, hadn’t thought I could get rid of the toaster!
I hoover my toaster with the crevice tool.
