Make me feel better... so embarrassed

On the train today and was caught off guard by a very sudden and heavy period and bled through my clothes.

I've just had to message my manager as I was on my way to a team meeting. I've had to turn around and go home as no way of hiding it all day. So embarrassed messaging my (male) manager. Stupid unpredictable perimenopausal periods.

I can understand why you’re embarrassed even though I don’t think you need to be. Hope your manager is kind and supportive 🙂

I once walked through the entire bottom floor of our office with my skirt tucked into my knickers before a colleague told me. Not the same I know, but we’ve all had something embarrassing happen I’m sure!

MaggieBsBoat · 15/01/2025 10:37

Oh @lifetheuniverseandeverything42 ive has this happen to me. In the office. I was actually just walking through our open plan office - no pain or bad omens at all - and I was flooded within seconds. I was wearing light grey trousers. I am actually burning with embarrassment typing this out. Nobody said anything. I had to leave and text my boss as I was rushing home. You have my sympathy! I am now paranoid.

Movinghouseatlast · 15/01/2025 10:38

It happened to me in the foyer of the National Theatre! A sudden unexpected flood, I bled all over the chair. I didn't even have heavy periods before perimenopause.

For me the floods didn't last long, maybe 6 months of so. It was a pain though.

I had the same - sandy coloured trousers, dreadful leak - but I was in PR at the time and had completed an interview and photo-shoot with my CEO and three other senior leaders, completely oblivious! Like Maggie, still has the ability to make me burn with shame...

Luckily, I work opposite a large Asda so legged it over and bought replacement clothes but my God - I can still remember the feeling when I went to the loo and realised 😳

Ginkypig · 15/01/2025 10:40

No need to be embarrassed!

these things happen and the fact this manager is male shouldn’t be a problem. We’re all adults and we know bodies do things unexpectedly sometimes!

if you had vomited you would just be saying sorry can’t make it and getting on with it.

ye it’s not great for the old self esteem but fuck it, life happens to us sometimes!

I did this at a meeting I was hosting. One older female employee said “cheer up, at least you haven’t got a saggy bum!”

NomadNancy · 15/01/2025 10:43

On stage in front of a big group of people. The last one I ever had...thank goodness. Think of yourself as the natural and beautiful example of a female human that has evolved over thousands of years to create this.

I've been thinking a lot about farting recently and evidence that it is really unhelpful as well as uncomfortable to hold it in. It's definitely more socially unacceptable to fart as a woman in my experience. The patriarchy is real.

CostaDelOrchard · 15/01/2025 10:46

Not period related but was once changing a barrel and had to climb over other barrels to get to it, anyway as I climbed back down I felt an almighty tear and the back of my trousers had completely ripped open! Had to drive home mid shift on a packed Friday night without the miserable pub manager realising. Of course my junior colleagues found it hilarious and inevitably the PM found out. Took months to live that one down.

Fontainebleau007 · 15/01/2025 10:47

Don't feel embarrassed it's happened to the best of us! We can't control these kind of things.

Changingname1988 · 15/01/2025 11:06

I was in my mid-20s working in a massive open plan office when I stood up and realised there was a huge blood stain on my skirt. I was mortified and didn’t have the confidence to speak up and ask to leave to go and get a change of clothes. It still makes my skin crawl with embarrassment.

madaboutpurple · 15/01/2025 11:11

When I was working I always had a spare outfit including underwear in my locker.I am sorry to hear of OP's situation however.

NatWestPigFamily · 15/01/2025 11:55

I was returning to work from Maternity leave and was invited out for a team curry dinner. My period unexpectedly started and was heavy. We were getting ready to leave and I got up to go to the toilet which is when I realised I had bled through my clothes. I then had to walk through a crowded restaurant of mainly drunk men to the table to get my handbag and sanitary items. I had obviously bled onto the chair and my male boss who was next to me had discreetly cleaned the chair with some napkins which he took with him to the toilet to dispose of. He didn’t say anything but gave me a gentle tap on the knee and gave me a kind understanding look. He then walked out close behind me shielding me. Never spoke of it. He is the best.

I once walked pretty much the whole length of Victoria Street in London with the same thing until a kindly stranger took pity on me. Oh the embarrassment 😟

DreadPirateRobots · 15/01/2025 12:01

I once started unexpectedly and several days early just as my Edinburgh to London train left Edinburgh - so five hours before I could feasibly get to any shop. I had to ask women in the carriage if they had any supplies they could give me, in front of their partners or families. I'm still grateful to the woman who helped me out.

Stuff happens.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/01/2025 12:40

Happened to me at work in a meeting. I felt it, went all through my dress and all over the chair.

I had to go home. To be fair my mostly male colleagues were very practical which was better than sympathy tbh.

lifetheuniverseandeverything42 · 15/01/2025 18:17

Thank you everyone. I was very grateful there was nobody in the train carriage at the time. Manager was fine, I got home and sorted myself out and joined my meeting on teams. Couldn't say thanks to everyone earlier as I had to take my mum to drs appointment. Stupid perimenopause, my body can't decide between stopping periods or having them every two weeks. So erratic. I had supplies with me but caught me completely by surprise. At least I had supplies so didn't get any worse by the time I got home.

I know we're all supposed to be strong women and not embarrassed about natural bodily events but that was not the case when I grew up and it's very difficult to undo all those years of programming.

My periods have become erratic and heavy, I wear period pants all the time and always dark clothes. It's so annoying and I wonder how long after the last period I'd feel able to wear lighter clothes again.

AliCatWalk · 30/11/2025 19:45

@lifetheuniverseandeverything42 I once strolled breezily out of the washroom at the grocery store, wearing my cute new poofy skirt, only to have a kind samaritan rush up behind me after a minute to alert me that I had accidentally tucked the skirt into my tights in the back after pulling them back up in the toilet and was thereby flashing my backside to everyone in the store 🙈
