Finding a driving instructor

Struggling to find an instructor for my 17 year old. I had an acquaintance lined up who was qualifying just before DD’s 17th. She strung me along a bit and now isn’t available until the summer. Every school I try is fully booked and don’t hold a waiting list. So do I just keep contacting them all each week until I eventually get an available instructor? Doesn’t help that DD has ASD so I was trying to follow up on recommendations from local SEN parents. Given up on that and just want to find someone who is available. Is it normally this difficult?

The AA have a list of their instructors which you can search by postcode.

Do you mention the ASD when you contact them? If so, try not mentioning it to see if it makes a difference.

I've recently been through this with DS who has just turned 17. I must have contacted well over a dozen individual instructors as well as a couple of larger driving schools and got absolutely nowhere - like you, they had no availability whatsoever and didn't operate wait lists.

In the end I got lucky that one of the first ones I contacted came back to me with a random regular slot in the middle of a weekday that just happened to fall during one of DS's free periods, so he's taken that. If that hadn't have come up, my plan was to look into an intensive course over the Easter holidays, which seemed to have no issues with availability.

Good luck!
