What item from your childhood/youth do you wish you still had?

Something that maybe got lost in a house move, left behind when you left home, broken, or that you didn't realise how much you loved until years later. Something that when you think about it now fills you with nostalgia.

Mine is the sun/moon face watch (day/night as opposed to a classic moonphase) that my mum bought me for my 16th birthday in 1988. They were such a thing then and I loved them so much. She got it from the catalogue and was still paying for it by my next birthday bless her. DD bought me a version of it for Christmas and I absolutely love it, but I wish I had the original too.

Also my original Magic Faraway Tree books from the 70s.

What's yours?

My red Snoopy watch, with Woodstock as the second hand. Timex still make them (or have started making them again) and am seriously toying with buying one (I'm in my 50s).

I had one of these too - loved it! I recently discovered you can download Snoopy animation to your Apple Watch face, so he appears every time I look at the time. Makes me ridiculously happy, (I'm 50)!

Forgot. All my copies of Smash hits magazines. Discontinued things ie chocolate. My old school cookery books for the recipes.

I had every copy of Smash Hits up until 1984 or so. Pristine condition.
I binned them 🤦‍♀️😔

My Sindy house, two Sindys and all their amazing clothes.... I wish I could have passed them on to my daughters.

And my teddies. My mum got rid of everything.

I wish I’d kept my sindy dolls, too

Quite a few things but my collection of Just 17 magazines springs to mind.

I had them all, including the preview magazine that was given away with Smash Hits.
it was my bible back then.
I binned them all.
And my Smash Hits - every single one from the first issue until about 1984.

My Pippa dolls. I had several and my favourite was one with dark skin and blonde hair. My dad made a dolls house/rooms à la Blue Peter and my mum made tiny curtains and bedding for it.
Later on it was my Chalet School books. I went back to see DM as an adult to discover she had cleared a load of stuff from the loft and given them away to a neighbour.

Sounds mad, but mine is a 3 inch little model of Lisa Simpson.

My childhood best friend gave her to me when we were about 7, and she's been everywhere with me.

I moved house in September and I haven't been able to find her. I have a horrible feeling that I tucked her inside a tea cozy for safe keeping, but then accidentally threw it away... I've looked in every other place I could have put her. She lived on my kitchen window sill and so would have gone in with the kitchen stuff, but I can't find her.

I looked on Ebay the other night for a replacement, but can't find quite the right one... Grrrr.

comewhinewith · 13/01/2025 11:39

I had a readers digest compendium of fairy stories, but dark ones like the red shoes, little match girl etc. I think there were 2-3 volumes.

I remember them vividly!

FoxtrotIndigoSierraHotel · 13/01/2025 11:43

My stamp collection. I had around 3000 stamps and was a bit of a nerd about. I lost it when we left my childhood home.

Anoisagusaris · 13/01/2025 11:50

My fancy paper collection

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 13/01/2025 11:50

My red Sony Walkman.

My dad always gave me money for birthdays, or gave my mum money to buy me something. But one year he bought me a little jewellery box and left it in my bedroom with a card that just said "Dad". I kept it for years and the lid broke, but I'm sure I would never have parted with it. Anyway, it got lost over the years after several house moves. I would love to have it back. Oddly, I still have the card!

Quite a few things but my collection of Just 17 magazines springs to mind.

Over the last few years I've managed to rebuild my collection of teen magazines including Just 17 and Sugar and they are some of my prized possessions. The only galling thing is the £££ I could have saved myself if I'd never thrown the bloody things away in the first place!

Virtually everything - our mother threw out absolutely everything from our childhood - clothes, toys, books, schoolwork etc Her excuse was "You won't be needing that old tat when you're grown up"

I made sure I kept loads of my children's stuff so that they could decided what to keep or get rid of when they were grown up. My daughter has a toddler and one of his favourite things to play with is something she had as a child.

How sad . I have two DDs 24 and 21. I always ask them to sort out what they want to keep . It’s in the loft. I made two boxes , one each, for them with their first shoes, newspapers from day they were born, first year of baby milestones etc.

greengreyblue · 13/01/2025 16:51

I had a box set of Famous Five books. Might be worth something. Mind you they were well thumbed!

ladyvimes · 13/01/2025 16:52

I had a couple of beautiful pop up books. A dolls house one, a fairy tale one and a Beatrix potter one. They were big and so detailed. Can’t get ones like them anymore. I loved them. Gutted I got rid of them years ago.

Blingismything · 13/01/2025 17:25

There are a few things, I did however manage to source a book from Ebay that I had loved as a child, it is called 'Jane's Country Year by Malcolm Saville'

My red Sony Walkman.

I bought exactly that on ebay last year.
I paid just over 40 squid.
Only ever had cheaper versions growing up so I'm chuffed to bits 😁

Girl Annuals

drspouse · 14/01/2025 20:35

I've just remembered my Sasha dolls. I had a girl and I think in theory my brother had a boy but I took it over.

I am highly tempted to buy DD one, though she will be 11...

Allthesnowallthetime · 14/01/2025 20:43

A desk that my grandfather made. I gave it to an international student as she had got pregnant and needed furniture for her flat (I think she'd been in halls before so hadn't needed those things before). We spend a lot of time with her, had her round for meals, supported her when father of her child cheated on her. I had a baby of my own at that time.

I still feel sad that she went back to her country without saying goodbye. I didn't expect the desk back but I think the lack of goodbye made me feel that all we'd given wasn't really appreciated and that feeling is kind of concentrated in having given away the desk.

I think the vintage Sasha dolls are now very expensive! Collectors' items.

RaraRachael · 15/01/2025 11:08

@greengreyblue Yes it is very sad that I've nothing left of my childhood but that's the kind of person she was. We often wonder why she bothered having us but if her "parenting" has taught me anything, it was to do the exact opposite when I was bringing up my two children.
