Something that maybe got lost in a house move, left behind when you left home, broken, or that you didn't realise how much you loved until years later. Something that when you think about it now fills you with nostalgia.

Mine is the sun/moon face watch (day/night as opposed to a classic moonphase) that my mum bought me for my 16th birthday in 1988. They were such a thing then and I loved them so much. She got it from the catalogue and was still paying for it by my next birthday bless her. DD bought me a version of it for Christmas and I absolutely love it, but I wish I had the original too.

Also my original Magic Faraway Tree books from the 70s.

What's yours?

Quite a few things but my collection of Just 17 magazines springs to mind.

NeedToKnow101 · 12/01/2025 20:54

And my Smash Hits

A book called Pondus the Penguin.

There are copies available on Abe books but the cheapest is £48.90 .

A weird one but my mum and dad’s VHS and audio tape recordings, they had dozens and dozens and it would have been so funny to watch/listen to them as an adult - mum had lots of films taped off the TV, pirated vhs from others, six hours of CITV taped in 1991 or so. I have got a box of my mum’s mix cassettes which are brilliant - gives me an idea of what my mum was like in the 80s before I was born.

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/01/2025 21:36

All my dolls and teddies from birth onwards.
I can remember all their names and personalities 😍
I rescued them from the dustbin when my mum threw them away, saying I was too old for them (around 12)
The 2nd time she did it, she chose bin day.
It was pure spite 🥺

MrsMitford3 · 12/01/2025 21:45

I had a bookcase full of my childhood books in my mum's cellar. She had a huge house and they were not in the way or bothering anyone. She gave them all away without asking/telling me. I was devastated.

A funny one-my Nanna used to be very glamorous (to my child's eyes anyway) and was amazing at entertaining etc. She had a drawer full of hostess aprons that my sister and I used to be allowed to try on-the kind that tied at the waist and were flowery and frilled and we just loved them. Much prettier than functional but I'd love to have them.

ZiggyZowie · 12/01/2025 21:50

My lamb.

It was knitted for me by my mum,it was pale blue with closed pink eyelids, pink paws.
I loved it.
My mum got rid of lots my stuff and I wish I still had it.

The photo of me and my dad on my 18th bday that my mother stole as she was angry I saw him.
The 10 week scan photo of my first baby that my mother ripped up saying it was disgusting again when I was 18😞

How sad.

Not cheap, but found you a copy.

I wish I'd kept my big yellow teapot for my kids.

I had this little yellow toy with yellow hair called sunshine that giggled when you shook it . I loved that toy.

I also wish I'd kept all my classic books - What Katy did, little women, Heidi etc.

Brefugee · 12/01/2025 22:21

I had a lovely Thunderbird 2 (painted metal - Corgi i think?) with a Thunderbird 4 inside.

Also a (also corgi i think) yellow submarine with pop up Beatles. I loved those things.

While I'm here (don't make me choose) my Captain Scarlett and Scott Tracey dolls.

You've just made me remember - my cousins and I and my brother made "radio shows" on their parents' reel to reel recorder! I'd love to have those!

I had a book of fairy tales from around the world called Once Long Ago which I loved and which vanished from the bookshelf at my parents house after I had left home.
For years I looked out for it without success in seconds hand bookshops ….and then along came Amazon and Abe Books and I was able to track down a copy.

Oh my goodness - the moment I read the thread title I thought of this book. I loved it too and it was given away in one of our many house moves (forces family). I've been trying to think of the title for years but have never managed to remember it properly to track it down. Just found it on goodreads and the story list is exactly right - The Bunyip, The Glass Mountain and all.

I'm currently with my dad planning my mum's funeral and this has made me so happy - he remembered the stories too. Thank you! I've been looking for it for about 40 years.

delphinedupont · 12/01/2025 22:30

My polly pocket collection. I was made to give them to my younger cousin as I was ‘too old’ for them according to my aunty. As a far too eager to please child I went along with it and I would love to have them now.

brawhen · 12/01/2025 22:35

A folder (document wallet) in the shape of an elephant. I have a photo of me with it on Christmas morning.

No idea why Santa thought I needed a document wallet, but all my favourite childhood stuff was 'item x in the shape of an animal'

I just looked this up and the cheapest used copy on Amazon.com is $300!!!!

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 12/01/2025 22:35

The yellow tamagotchi I lost in an actual haystack. Only in theory though, I nearly bought one having seen they're back in fashion but realised I have plenty to do and to look after I don't need one of those beeping at me!
Also the navy school cardigan my gran knitted for me with pencil sharpener buttons, I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.

Barbadossunset · 12/01/2025 22:38

Noodlezoodle
I’ve just looked it up and that looks like a copy in very good condition. Unfortunately the one I bought 20 odd years ago is very scruffy.

I have a big yellow teapot, I found it on eBay and bought it for my daughter because I loved mine so much. My daughter doesn't play with it which makes me sad!

I lost a colour change Hello Kitty in a house move when I was 6. I still wonder where she went.

Latenightreader · 12/01/2025 22:50

A programme for King Lear. My Dad took me to see it when I was about ten and I didn’t fully appreciate the story although I recognised a lot of the cast (Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Richard Briers). Afterwards we were in the bar in a tent (the theatre was closed and the performance in a giant marquee) and I was really bored. I recognised one of the actors leaving and asked him for his autograph. He signed, then took me over to the table where most of the rest of the cast were sitting and they all signed - they were really lovely to me. Then someone said that they’d get the rest of the cast to sign, and I could pick the programme up the following day, which I duly did, and treasured it for years. No idea where it is now. I think I put it in a bag to go in the loft in my late teens and it got slung out by accident.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/01/2025 23:09

I was absolutely gobsmacked when my big yellow tea pot was returned to me. I was amazed my completely unsentimental mum had kept it. My favourite video when I was growing up was about the restoration of York Minster after the fire. I still know it off by heart. But the tape broke, and I can't find another copy anywhere.

Nextyearhopes · 12/01/2025 23:11

My Brownies handbook. Being in the Brownies was one of the happiest things of my childhood and I with I could find it.

I saw the Brownies come into our church before Christmas. I have had an awful year with bereavement, house move x3, so much change and when I saw them, I got a lump in my throat wishing I could go back in time and talk our leader Snowy. She was so sensible.

therewasafishinthepercolator · 12/01/2025 23:17

Build A Better Burger. I WILL own it again one day. I will.

This isn't mine. It's random pic off Internet. I yearn for it.

And my tree house. My little car was yellow.

DH kept loads of his childhood toys. I'm so envious. I also miss my Barbies, Rainbow Brite (DH bought me a vintage one for Christmas 😊) and My Little Pony Grooming Parlour.
