If you get a bonus in April, when do you find out the amount

My partner started a job last year, he's quite senior and is doing great job but he's not sure how much of a bonus he will get ( he's been told he will be eligible for top level bonus, if that's the correct term lol) he's not sure when he will find out and doesn't want to go chasing. When do people normally find out? Or does it just arrive on the payslip for that month?

What is the bonus based on? Is it company financial performance or something else?

dollybirdydidmedirty · 12/01/2025 13:52

He doesn't even know. His job title was changed to a more senior role after about 6 mths but he want told

I think we usually find out the end of Jan/start of Feb as part of it is based on company performance too

Normandy144 · 12/01/2025 13:56

We typically get bonus in April and paid on the April pay. Our company is usually really late in telling us so we tend to find out a couple of weeks prior to pay day. Just depends.

dollybirdydidmedirty · 12/01/2025 14:08

I just asked him.. Apparently it's 'just a pot of money allocated to bonus's' so I don't know how that works

Our work bonus is performance based (performance of the business, not of us individually). If we get one, it's paid in November. They normally confirm it about six weeks before it would be paid, so in our world we get told mid-October if we're getting one and the bonus percentage they're paying.

Seriously how do you expect us to know when every company is different?

DoYouReally · 12/01/2025 14:36

No one here can tell you as it's going to vary in companies.

Is there a central repository or employee handbook that he could check as its probably covered off there?

dollybirdydidmedirty · 12/01/2025 14:42

@luckylavender I'm not expecting you to know when my partner will hear, I'm asking when people generally hear, so that I can get an idea. That is all

He should ask his boss or colleagues.

MassiveSalad22 · 12/01/2025 14:46

Depends. I just get mine plopped into my pay cheque. We’ve known DH’s predicted bonus for a year as it’s a target to work towards, hence they’re motivated to work towards it, hence they achieve it, hence we receive it. His job involves sales which take years so that’s how you can foresee.

JessicafelloffTheKnappett · 12/01/2025 14:48

We should hear 2 Weeks or so before, but I have on occasion (shite manager) only found out when I get paid.

I think the point people are making is that there is no "generally". My DH has always had bonuses which were usually paid in February or March in order that people could invest etc if they wanted to before the end of the tax year. However, in one company bonuses were not paid until May. A friend worked for a company where bonuses were paid in November. There is no way of anyone being able to tell you exactly when this bonus will be paid or how it will be paid – part of payroll or a completely separate payment. Either your DH has to ask HR or a colleague in the company or you just have to wait to find out.

cosietea · 12/01/2025 14:56

It sounds like you're already mentally spending his bonus. Why are you so desperate to know?

I don't think that's her question.... it's if you get paid in April, when do you find out the amount?
You could say the same for any month... how far in advance do you know how much?
As I said, according to our HR process managers are supposed to tell their staff 2 weeks in advance - but I've had a shite manager who wouldn't tell you, so you had wait until you received your payslip.
I guess the point is... it depends.

soberfabulous · 12/01/2025 15:04

I get a bonus in march. We find out about two days before pay day and it's paid into our march salary.

Beezknees · 12/01/2025 15:05

We get a performance related bonus and we are finding out at the end of this month I believe.

ExtraDisorganised · 12/01/2025 15:09

Ours gets paid with our normal monthly pay and we are usually told a couple of weeks beforehand. It follows the publication of the company end of year results.

I appreciate that she's not asking about the month but I suppose my point is that there is no standard process between companies for this kind of thing – it will be paid in different months and even even if you know which month your company pays, the process will vary from company to company. In some places you will find out well in advance of payday, others it might just get paid in salary, sometimes your boss might pull you in for a well done and congratulations chat, sometimes you get a letter. If her husband can't or won't ask anyone then they're just going to have to wait and see what happens in April.

What’s wrong with that?? Forward planning finances is a very normal thing to do surely. In fact me and DH are just heading out the door to look at a car which we’ll buy with money we don’t have yet. Because it’s his bonus.

Rosecoffeecup · 12/01/2025 15:52

I've worked for 3 different companies (all FS) and whilst they've varied between January and March, I've only ever found out a week or so before, maybe a fortnight.

What's wrong with that? We always use DHs to pay for the family holiday so I'm always eager to know how much it is

Twilightstarbright · 12/01/2025 16:33

I work in financial services. It’s a tightrope between giving payroll enough time to carry out instructions ahead of cut off ie someone wants to put their bonus in their pension, but also give time for negotiation. DH has on many occasions told his boss the bonus isn’t acceptable and they come back with a revised offer. Women do this far less than men though!

Any time in March from my experience.
