part of me thinks ohh could be a secret hater, part of me thinks they are active on social media but like to
pretend they are not

part of me thinks they don’t know how it works and they thinking they like your post everyone they know will see it or something

What do you think ?

I spend a lot of time on Facebook and instagram but I don't post and I very rarely like posts or comment on them. If it's somebody's birthday I will message them instead. I do post stories occasionally and the same people see them which I assume is an algorithm and nothing to do with their interest in me.

I don't like people showing off and bragging and it felt that social media is full of that but then I saw a post about sharing in people's joy and congratulating their moments and being supportive and I thought it was a really nice sentiment so will try to be more like that - but then you have those weird people who like everything and it's a fine line between supporting and stalking so...

I actually do this myself on ig
as I only watch a handful of people
so I heart their stories
but not posts

reason I don’t heart posts is I don’t want others to feel left out as in why is jen liking x post but not mine
so I only heart stories

Do you think people are paying such close attention that they know whose posts you like?

Presumably there are some

Mairzydotes · 12/01/2025 12:43

I saw a similar post from a bluetick influencer.

She didn't consider the option that maybe they didn't think her content was good enough to warrant a like.

Kattuccino · 12/01/2025 12:48

Is this on Facebook? Do you get notifications that someone has watched your story and then check if they have liked it? I've never posted a story so don't know how it works. I don't automatically like every story I watch but don't want to be rude!

MayaPinion · 12/01/2025 12:51

Ahh, sorry. That’ll be me clicking through 300 stories to get to the ones with cats. I’m not that interested in pics of people doing Parkrun for the 8734th time.

ShadowCalls · 12/01/2025 12:51

I've just had to google because had no idea what stories were, MN is the only SM I follow and I usually just skim read and don't heart/like/thumbs up/watch anything..

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 12/01/2025 12:54

I only like stories if it is something I really like or something special, and then I am as likely to comment as to like. Same with posts.

I have friends who like everything and it becomes meaningless.

PigInAHouse · 12/01/2025 12:58

JennyTals · 12/01/2025 12:10

No I mean I watch only the stories of the handful I want to
and I heart the stories

but I don’t like the posts
incase others see

That’s what I said… you ‘heart’ every story you watch?

chakrakkhan · 12/01/2025 12:59

I think you've got too much time on your hands.

Beezknees · 12/01/2025 12:59

I don't think anything. I don't care.

whydoihavetowork · 12/01/2025 13:00

I think (especially of people that never post anything) stalker! So many people I know who never post a thing or like a thing but put a story on and BAM they are the first 10 viewers - every time! Largely people who claim they "don't do socials." The point of social media is being social and sharing things. I am not sure why some people think they are above this yet choose to sit watching everyone else's lives!

omelettenipples · 12/01/2025 13:03

I just have stories rolling when I'm doing my makeup/drinking coffee etc, I don't even pay attention to whose story it is half the time.

chollysawcutt · 12/01/2025 13:05

I would prefer to be a receiver of hearts for a post than a story because the story heart goes to my pms/dms and it feels like a dialogue is being initiated, which I don't necessarily want. A post heart is more neutral and unobtrusive in its notification.

I would say no one - really no one! - is going to trawl through your likes on another's post and compare it to the lack of likes you are giving them.

omelettenipples · 12/01/2025 13:06

This is bonkers.

Why not remove them as a friend then, if you think so little of them? Then they won’t be able to stalk you.

This sounds all very self conscious and odd.

Engage with the content as you see fit but to be concerned about what the other followers think of your engagement sounds v paranoid....bit like this nonsense:

"part of me thinks ohh could be a secret hater, part of me thinks they are active on social media but like to
pretend they are not
part of me thinks they don’t know how it works and they thinking they like your post everyone they know will see it or something"

I suggest that you think too much and too negtaovely about what others think of you. Here's some good news for you - everyone else is preoccupied with their own lives and does give you a second thought.

Quitelikeit · 12/01/2025 13:23

The point is if you watch the story the poster can see you have watched it but not liked it

But so what?

15minutesaday · 12/01/2025 13:28

How do you know if someone is watching your posts if they don’t comment or like, or whatever?

Personally, I don't give it a second thought. I might think they were weird and stalkerish if they didn't interact beyond posting a heart though. Even more so if I didn't know them in real life.

Edit, I see @Quitelikeit has answered my question.

Obviously SM has moved on since I last took any real interest in it beyond my hobby groups.

Edited again: I'm now going to unfollow this topic/post as my question has been answered and don't need a million irrelevant replies (to me) clogging up my notifications. Sorry OP. No offence meant.

PigInAHouse · 12/01/2025 13:32

Do people really expect every single person who watches their story to react to it?

YeGodsandLittleFishies · 12/01/2025 13:40

I only “like” things I actually agree with.

I have a lovely friend who is a wonderful person, who posts twaddle from
time to time (think inspirational meme type stuff). I don’t like those.

Another friend has a homeschooling blog. Mostly full of lovely activities. But very occasionally she posts absolute nonsense about what life is like for children in school. I wouldn’t humiliate her by disagreeing publicly and correcting her out of date/incorrect assumptions- but I’m not going to like them either.

I’ll happily like pictures of kids/pets/holidays as I scroll past because it’s meaningless but I won’t put a like on anything that implies agreement or endorsement if I don’t actually agree.

TheCatterall · 12/01/2025 13:40

@JennyTals i give zero shits about any of this and the level of overthinking makes me wonder if some folks need to avoid Instagram? Who cares if someone sees something you’ve liked?

if you can’t like a dieting, decorating, fashion, political or opinion post etc for fear of friends and family seeing it then you need to be deleting folks or getting a thicker skin.

MassiveSalad22 · 12/01/2025 13:43

I don’t think anything of it.

Now that you’ve prompted me to think about it, I can tell you I basically only go on instagram to look at stories and reels, no one whose stories I watch (real life friends) come up on my posts feed (usually that’s businesses and celebs). So I wouldn’t ever see whatever my real life friends post as a grid post.
