Child DLA- how soon do I claim?

my child (6) is on the pathway for an ADHD diagnosis. I looked up the information online and they meet all of the criteria options. I contacted my doctor to start the assessment process last week and was told that there’s a three year waiting list to get assessed at the moment in my area. It’s not a massive issue, we aren’t struggling but it’s more of a preemptive measure for the future? The doctor mentioned that I don’t need a formal diagnosis to claim DLA though and the symptoms my child has mean it’s worth me looking into. I feel almost guilty applying though. Like I’m trying to monetise the issue, or make a profit out of it. I’m a single parent and money isn’t horrendous, but I am very careful. I think this makes it worse though, that we would actually benefit from the money? Does that make any sense?

so, for people who have claimed (and managed to read through my waffle!) should I be waiting for the official diagnosis, or try to start claiming now? Thanks if you’ve read this far! Any expert knowledge or advice would be welcomed

Start the claim now.
It's better to apply and be turned down than not apply but then discover in a few year time that you could have been recieving it all along.
If that makes sense.
