Fur coat question

Along with a lot of other things, I've just inherited a full length real fur coat (no idea what sort of fur, but I don't think it's mink, fox or rabbit). It's very well made and the label gives the name / address of a furrier in Paris. I don't want this coat. But it's such good condition, I'd describe the fur as luxurious and if the poor animal has been dead for years, is there anything useful I can do with it? It seems adding insult to injury (for the animal) if I were to burn it or just put in the bin. Any suggestions please.

Would a local theatre be able to use it I wonder?

Tinselinthewhoopsiebasket · 09/01/2025 17:56

Have you a dpet? My ddog would love that.. My dgm's df was a furrier... Dgm hid her collection and I came across them once when I was hiding in the wardrobe... She was guilt ridden. She actually became vegetarian in her 60's....

I have my Grandmother's beaver coat.

I feel much like you do, I have worn it in very cold weather and nothing comes close to it for warmth but.....

We tried to give one to our cats as a bed. They ignored it.

Theatre is a good idea.

Supersimkin7 · 09/01/2025 18:02

You can get them made into
a bedspread. Very useful
in winter.

GiddyRobin · 09/01/2025 18:35

....Phoebe? Is that you?

Sorry, OP, I couldn't help myself. I'd agree with a theatre though, but be prepared that they might also be a bit iffy with it!

Iamanunsafebuilding · 09/01/2025 18:39

You could see if you have a furrier local to you and either have it remodelled into a throw or cushion cover or donate it to them

PemberleynotWemberley · 09/01/2025 18:44

Donate it for Ukraine- someone freezing because the Russians have knocked their power out won't care about its provenance, just be thankful for the warmth. Nothing you do will bring the 'donor' animals back to life but giving it a valuable second life could be considered the most ethical act.

DeliciousApples · 09/01/2025 18:45

I'd consider wearing it. Why should the animals have died for nothing. Nobody will know what it's made of. If anyone asks just say "I presume it's faux fur".

katy1111 · 09/01/2025 18:48

Maybe sell it and give the proceeds to an animal charity.

helpfulperson · 09/01/2025 18:50

I have a mink coat sitting in my wardrobe that I can't bear to throw out but couldn't find anyone to take. Although ukraine is a good shout. I'll see if anyone is doing that.

Kashmiri24 · 09/01/2025 18:52

Turn it into a throw and tell people it’s fake fur.

MaggieBsBoat · 09/01/2025 18:53

I sold my fur coat inheritances on eBay after being unable to find anyone locally to take them on and not wanting to bury them in the back garden. Buyer in Germany gave me nearly 3k for them.

Send it to me. I'll wear it

thesaskedminger · 09/01/2025 18:57

PETA takes them I believe. I looked into it when I was clearing out DM house but in the end I put it in the skip. I didn't have the mental energy to do much else at the time. It was a while ago and I don't regret it.

Words · 09/01/2025 19:22

I am actually serious. I love fur. I would wear it round the house and save on heating bills and conserve the planet.

Spread it on top of my bed - same.

Frith2013 · 09/01/2025 19:27

Could it be made into a rug?

tillytoodles1 · 09/01/2025 19:29

My late mil left a beautiful fur coat that she'd had for years. When she died it went in the skip because her daughters didn't want it.

SWnewstart · 09/01/2025 19:46

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will try the local AmDram (we're in a small rural location, no proper theatre for at least an hour and a half drive). The style isn't for me - quite wide, but not padded, shoulders and the fur is so gorgeous there's no way anyone could think it was faux fur. I could try an animal charity for bedding maybe or possibly ask my clever friend to re-purpose into a throw. Anything rather than simply discard. If it could be sold (wasn't aware fur clothing could actually be sold on sites like Ebay) then I'd happily donate money to charity.

Lots of people do wear fur, honestly! I know someone who is a furrier and you'd be surprised. Fur makes a beautiful warm throw if you don't want to wear it

SWnewstart · 11/01/2025 09:21

Update - talking to a friend about this and she said her neighbour volunteers at an animal rescue centre where old fur garments are used as bedding for newborn pups and kittens, so that's where the coat is off to!
