What motivates you? (work) interview question

I know it sounds like a basic question but I still really struggle with this (ASD). Would I be expected to answer in STAR form for something like this?

I’m motivated by helping people, and I was just going to say things that motivated me in previous roles when I got to help xyz.
I don’t have a metric for the ‘R’ / result in STAR, and I’m not sure this kind of question expects a full on star answer?

I wouldn't use STAR for this.

I'd say the most common answer I get to this is around this is around making a difference/working on and completing projects. Though I silently clap for the ones who are honest and say 'money' - not very professional though 😂

So I'd just keep it simple. 'I'm motivated by the idea I'm helping people and making a difference in their lives. Previously I've done so by (volunteering/working in a shop/whatever) and loved the feeling, which is why I like the idea of working here, as I can see myself doing the same.'

You could say helping someone with a difficult problem/requirement and giving a bit extra - for example when a customer wanted a very specific pattern of curtains not available in any UK retailers, and you managed to not only source and order them for her from France, but also matching cushions and bedding - she was delighted and you really got a buzz about of helping her.

I'd say what motivates you and link it to the job you're applying for.

"I'm motivated by helping people, which is why this role appealed to me because X aspect of it means I'll get a lot of satisfaction from helping people with Y"
