Asking for a friend - how many croissants a day is too many?

BrianWankum · 08/01/2025 19:20

(Obviously the friend is me!)

Went to Costco this morning. Fancied a croissant so bought one of the boxes of 12. There are only me and dd in the house, no visitors planned in the next 24 hours.

Was really hungry by the time we got out so ate one in the car on the way home (breakfast). Had two with smoked salmon for lunch. One with Nutella (keeping dd company - afternoon tea? Now making one as a cheese toastie for dinner.

Is 5 excessive? Can I get away with another toastie later?

I remember BonsoirAnna (of ye olden MN times) telling us that no French person would dream of having more than ONE croissant at breakfast. She was very svelte I believe, and I am less svelte, possibly due to my two-croissant habit.

Well that is evidently because the French have said croissant with an indulgent homemade hot chocolat 😂 It would be rude not to!

you would drink squash with croissants GCAcademic?

Now that’s just going too far. 😂

Turophilic · 08/01/2025 20:59

why can the French eat them for breakfast and still be svelte?!

It's the black coffee and cigarettes instead of all the other meals.

I had a freshly baked croissant from Betty's of Harrogate when at a tour of the factory for a thing I was doing. Still warm. Greatest croissant of my life.

I don't think they eat them, they just look at them in the boulangerie window.

It would be an interesting experiment OP. A US professor once lost loads of weight by eating only packaged crap like twinkies. There's another man in America who's eaten nothing but 3 Big Macs a day for decades and is slim. Your diet plan could be 1500 calories of croissants a day.

CalicoPusscat · 08/01/2025 21:16

I think the supersize me guy died? I'll have to google just to make sure I'm not misremembering

SexAndCakes · 08/01/2025 21:19

Designate today as Croissant Day and forget any limits. Tomorrow you can resume normal croissant etiquette and stick to one (ish).

NewPinkJacket · 08/01/2025 21:26

why can the French eat them for breakfast and still be svelte?!

Apart from the 45% who are overweight/obese?

Callipygion · 08/01/2025 21:30

Well I feel positively wicked having two for elevenses (warmed up and spread with home made lemon curd - delicious!)

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 08/01/2025 21:35

Love this thread. It reminds me of someone I used to work with who always said - they wouldn't sell them in shops if they were bad for you.
He has ended up as a professor of biology I think.

I miss BonsoirAnna, what a character 😂

when Pregnant croissants were the only thing I could eat - had 3 for each meal. So 9.

I didn’t know that croissants could have babies!

SleeplikeababyTonight · 08/01/2025 21:50

'Your diet plan could be 1500 calories of croissants a day.'

And gain some nutrition from a wonderful array of fillings. I mean there's not much you cannot do with a croissant, endless possibilities!

BumpyaDaisyevna · 08/01/2025 21:51

The formula is n+1, where n is the number consumed so far.

You're welcome.

Or, even more interestingly croissants, and doughnuts can procreate to form the wonderful cronut. Strangely Costco sell mini cronuts, too! 😂

KvotheTheBloodless · 08/01/2025 21:55

I am horribly envious! Envy I've just been diagnosed with coeliac disease and will never get to eat delicious, flaky croissants again Sad

BrianWankum · 08/01/2025 22:04

Oh really sorry to hear that @KvotheTheBloodless - hope you are feeling well now and can find plenty of things you do like to eat!

I'm squeezing in a late 6th - remembered some unopened from Christmas pistachio cream (vegan, for those concerned about my butter intake, and just a small jar, not one of those giant Costco ones) and couldn't resist. Delish.

Will ask dd to freeze whatever she doesn't eat before I get home from work tomorrow!

Well you might as well finish the box while they are fresh 🤷🏽‍♀️

Just don't do it every day month

You probably shouldn’t have gone to Costco on an empty stomach.

My mum and her sisters bought a dozen to share once. I ate them all and they went mental at me.

Three cross aunts are plenty.

😂😂😂

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 08/01/2025 22:13

I ate between 6-8 a day for 12 days whilst on holiday. They were tiny though cos they were frozen gluten free ones but tasted bloody amazing and I could've gladly eaten more but didn't want to risk them running out

Endofyear · 08/01/2025 22:24

I think it's fine to OD on croissants once in a while! It's not like you're doing it every day. As long as you enjoyed them, it's all good 😋

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 08/01/2025 22:28

croissants are crammed full of butter! have you ever watched them being made?? the typical pack of butter is 220 grams nowadays!! absolutely not good for you!

AI Overview

The amount of butter needed to make croissants depends on the recipe and the size of the croissants, but it's typically around 250–300 grams for six croissants:

BBC Good Food: 300 grams of butter at room temperature

Buttermilk Pantry: 250 grams of unsalted butter at room temperature

Yes I have, it is how they get all of the flakiness, a little like rough puff pastry in a way.
I have to block it from my mind when I put yet more butter on the top, as I like it to melt in. 😳🤭

lissie123 · 08/01/2025 22:31

I really want an almond croissant now.

Adore croissants but they have put more weight on me than anything else. I hate that they’re cakes- why can the French eat them for breakfast and still be svelte?!

I used to live in France. If you want a serious answer then it would be:

a) a croissant is traditionally eaten on its own. Putting extra butter and jam and such like is a British thing.
b) they don't eat them every day. Most French people might have a croissant or other viennoiserie on a weekend, not on a standard working day.
c) they are strict with mealtimes and don't snack in between, except the designated snack times.
d) as a pp said, they are generally quite tight on portion size, compared to the UK.
e) traditionally, they have enough time to cook from scratch (difference in culture from the UK in terms of working hours, often meeting friends for an aperitif rather than a meal). This is less true nowadays but still more than the UK, IMO.

Haffiana · 08/01/2025 22:33

If you squeeze a croissant really hard it will end up the size of a malteser. That PROVES that they do not have as many calories as is commonly believed.

You can definitely eat 6 maltesers, so QED you can eat 6 croissants.
