Gabapentin and UTIs

Hi all

I've been prescribed gabapentin for some nerve pain issues I've been having. These are pain from bladder and surrounding area following a run of recurrent UTIs. I understand gabapentin can be quite effective for nerve pain but when I read the leaflet in the side effects section it says that in up to 1 in 10 people a side effect can be UTIs! Since UTIs are what got me in this mess in the first place I'm reluctant to take them and start the whole cycle again. However, my consultant says he hasn't heard of UTIs being a problem.

Therefore, I'm interested in peoples experience of gabapentin and if you've had a UTI while on them (which is unusual for you). In in interests of fairness, it would be great if you also posted if you've taken them and no UTI.

Thanks in advance XX

Thanks @MagicalMystical and @PlopSofa . I looked up the B vitamins you mentioned and I should be OK as eat lots of their sources and love marmite!

Surprisingly and sadly I thought the same myself. However I did some blood tests and I’m low in vitamin b12, despite eating red meat twice a week (very lean), lots and lots of dairy and plenty of protein at every meal, I should be chock full of b12 but I’m not. I’ve started taking a methylated b12 to bump it up.

im not sure if im low in the others (I was low in iron too) but I notice it I have floradix three to four times a week 20ml I just generally feel better. I also eat marmite, tons more f greens, broccoli every night and lots of pulses too plus eggs. I should be tiptop condition and yet no, often I feel fatigued which is really annoying.

aftet age 40 you can go to your GP and ask for a well person checkup. Then ask for extra tests! I was low on vitamin D also. And I’ve discovered I need 5000iu a day or else my levels drop fast. I would never have known this without good testing. I think all of this helps keep the nerves going mad. But I could be wrong, I hope the medicine works for you, whatever the case.

Well I'm going to start taking it despite the UTI warning that comes on the leaflet. The nerve pain has really been bothering me this week and my last hope of vaginal estrogen hasn't done too much. I shall report back! Xxx

Hello all. So I went for it and am taking gabapentin now with no side effects so far. However I am still having pain symptoms. I'm taking 300 mg three times a day. For those that have used this drug what dosage did you need to go to for pain control? I'd be grateful for your input. Xxx
