A retreat for a 'single' man

My DH left his job in December after years of horrific stress, and will start a new one in February. I am trying to encourage him to take a short break this month to relax and recharge before he starts his new job. I can't go with him due to my own work commitments so it needs to be suitable for a lone person.

I'd be grateful for recommendations of resorts but not long haul, even though he'd love some winter sun. I'm just thinking there must be places where one can fully disconnect from everything and everyone and feel pampered and taken care of. He enjoys exercise, long walks, and will be happy to read his books and listen to podcasts.

He would not enjoy being in a resort with young families. Our DC are in their late teens so he's well passed that stage.

Thanks!

What about a walking holiday - not with a guide, but where they give you a route and transport bags for you? Often there is an option to upgrade accommodation or add hotel nights on to the beginning or end. Southern Spain or Portugal?

Try InnTravel for ideas, but I think there are several operators.

Somewhere like Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire might suit. Quite a few men go there, including gay couples, as well as women.
He should be able to find someone to talk to if he wants, it’s quite a friendly place. But there are also quiet lounges and silent spaces in the spa etc. (the candle pool, for example.)
I have always felt cocooned from the outside world when I’m there, it’s very comfortable and soothing. Outside walks aplenty as well as lots of classes, treatments etc.

He's a man. You going on holiday and leaving him the house a few days will be the best gift. Guys like space with no effort.

@brawhen that's the sort of thing we'd enjoy, thank you, maybe not for this particular break as it would be too long to do alone, but possibly for us together later in the year!
@SiobhanSharpe, thanks but that wouldn't appeal to him for more than one night, if at all!!
@bifurCAT, thank you for your insight, but I'm looking for a break for DH, not me. And he definitely wants to get out of the house.😉

Has he looked for anything? Seems he has the time.

WorldWideWords · 07/01/2025 08:11

@JimHalpertsWife yes thank you, we're both looking, but thanks for checking🙄
@Chroniclesofstress, not his thing I'm afraid, but saving the link for myself! 😊

Adults only hotel in the Canary Islands? He'll be able to book a package without too much effort and it's a good time of year to go walking or cycling, which is available in abundance on all the islands.

I like the look of White Suites in Playa Blanca Lanzarote which can be booked direct or is available via the usual package operators.

A friend of mine donkeys years ago went on a retreat at a monestary I think in Wales. He loved it.

This is where I'd go! Not cheap though...

I have just booked a cruise for similar reasons. Bit random and no idea if it will do what I need. But I figured that all the food is sorted out, I will be able to get off at the different ports and go exploring and I don't have to move hotels or anything. It wouldn't normally be my sort of thing but I figured it was worth a try. Some of the single supplements are crazy so you seem to have to be picky but it might be worth considering. (Or it might be dreadful, I haven't been yet so who knows!)
