Help! How does this valve turn off the water

I need to disconnect my washing machine as I'm moving. It looks straight forward but.... the cold water pipe is connected to this valve . There's no turny things to turn the water off to this valve .
So how would I disconnect it without causing a leak . I need to be able to turn the stopcock on and not flood it after !

Turn it off at the outside stop tap? Run the taps until the water stops and then disconnect the washing machine. Or have you got another internal stop tap under the sink? Or is that the under the sink one?

Oh sorry, just realised you’re not swapping the washing machine. Hmmmm, you maybe need a plumber then to replace that.

Edited

If I turn the stop cock off, when I turn it back on , will the water come out of where the cold water pipe was connected ?

You can buy a cap to screw on until someone is putting another washing machine or dishwasher there.

LIZS · 06/01/2025 20:36

You probably should be able to isolate the valve before undoing the pipe. Should there be a tap in that screw hole? Maybe take the picture to a plumbing supplier and ask what might fit.

Looks like someone has taken off the lever and not replaced it.

You need to turn the goldish looking bit at the top. Try using pliers.

Yes, so it wouldn’t work. You need that stop tap replacing I guess?

its a balofix valve,
you can
a. find a small adjustable spanner and rotate the brass part 90 degrees, or
b. you may have another valve on another appliance, you can unscrew the plastic lever and then screw it onto this valve, again turn 90 degrees to turn off

This - turn 90 degrees

you can pick one of the valves up at screw fix (code 51231) and then use the leaver from that, they are £1.68

MamaBobo · 06/01/2025 20:44

It’s a standard washing machine stop valve like this one but as @NotDavidTennant says the little lever has been removed. They come with interchangeable little levers….so if you buy a new one it will come with levers. Cheap as chips at any DIY store. You can then replace the missing lever by screwing it into the gold thread. You can then turn it off. That also leaves it ready to use for the next occupier.

I did it! And I didn't manage to flood the old house but now I have another issue ! The water pipe won't connect on to the valve at my new house ! 🙃
When I manage to try and tighten it , it goes wonky !
